Overactive thyroid has just been diagnosed for my 16 yr old dd

She is tired all the time, swollen glands, hair failing out and sudden weight loss. She also has severe palpitations at night usually. She has circualtion problems (she has reynauds disease).

But she is having another scan on Tuesday and I am getting a little worried. It seems odd to have this at such a young age.

Anyone else have this at an early age and can shed some light on it?

My daughter had this and then she had under active. I put it down to fluctuations due to age. She has had regular tests and has been normal since

Thanks Toothbrush. What symptoms did she have? Were they sudden?

My DD was diagnosed with this at 11. She had many of the symptoms you mention and when I look back at photos now I can't believe that we didn't see how ill she was.

She was put on medication (carbimazole) which controlled the condition for several years. She was completely well and healthy during this time. She then came off the medication but relapsed after only a few months and had to go back on it.

Last summer she had radioactive iodine treatment, at the age of 18. Unfortunately it wasn't completely successful so she is currently on a low dosage of carbimazole until she can find a gap in her social life to have the radioactive treatment again!

Spam - she had a variety of symptoms but tbh it can be hard to separate normal stuff from symptoms if it is mild

e.g. I'm tried and my hair is falling out.... Wish I could claim the losing weight bit!!

Hi. I feel for you and your daughter. The thyroid is a stupid complicated little gland that causes alot of problems and is quite hard to fix even with meds. Is she on any medication yet?

Sorry for this late response. Essays and sickness doing my head in!

Today she is really unwell with low BP 111/59 or is it 59/111 (Im never quite sure which way round it goes, but I noticed it was not in usual range). She has got her period today and is as white as a sheet and utterly exhausted. i thought hypothyroid made you hyper and agitated, no?

They have referred her to an endocrinologist and her scan showed no abnormalities of the thyroid gland.

She is sick and exhausted all the time and I am feeling useless.

The doctor did mention a medication but said he wanted to wait for the endocrinologist to see her first. How long does it take for the meds to work? Should I just ask them to put her on them now?

Does it affect your periods? the more I Google the less I know, there seems so much conflicting advice. Confused
