bronchilitus

DD was diagnosed with bronchilitus last week but they didn't keep her in hospital as her blood oxygen level was okay and she was feeding a little. She has gradually been getting better but has dreadful coughing fits almost hourly through the night and has brought up her last two morning feeds due to coughing fits. Any tips to soothe the coughing? x

Its awful, my 12 week old daughter has just gotten over it. We were told just to ride it out
You could take her back to the docs / hospital, as we were told that day 4 / 5 were the worst days, which is when my DD was having awful coughing fits and bringing up feeds etc, from then on she was just snuffy.
One thing I found was that raising the moses basket at the top helped slightly.

Nearly 6 months Twiglett. We've been hitting the calpol. thanks for the sympathy, am knackered as also coping with our 2 year old who chose this week to drop his lunchtime sleep ........ took her back to the Drs who said the same thing, live with it .... glad there is light out there, would be nice to enjoy New Year as it messed up Christmas with my angel being in pain

Dd2 had this very badly at 3 weeks and ds less severely at 6months - both hospitalised. I had them both sleep in their car seats when the coughing was bad so they were raised which is what the hospital told me to do. In the evenings I took a chair into the bathroom, put the shower on, made a cup of tea and sat in the warm damproom with baby over my shoulder as for croup. Also HV suggested putting baby face down across my knee and back slapping and rubbing massage. This should clear the chest a bit before feeding. I know it helps because it helps relieve my asthma. If you're worried go back - it took us 3 visits to doc before I was taken seriously.

All sympathy to you mother of eve. Our DS had it over Xmas - his first Xmas and he was miserable!! The doctor gave us an asthma type inhaler thought our DS is 11 months not 6. Have you tried Medised for the nights - it has a sedative in it that helps during the night. Best of luck. Our DS is quite well now although we now both have stinking colds. Did you know you can pass the RS Virus - which causes bronchilitus by hand contact, so my suggestion is you stay away from other babies, which you are probably doing anyway.

dd had it at 3 months, just escaped hospitalisation as we managed to maintain her o2 levels and keep her hydrated. She couldn't cry properly, was very sick each feed and became wheezy and cold. Raising her cothead to about 60o slope in her cot, spending long periods in her car seat or bouncy chair (which she did anyway due to reflux)and humidified air helped. I had to express and feed ebm little and often so you may find smaller, more frequent feeds will stay down more easily. RSV is one of the common cold viruses so very easily picked up at this time of year and babies are particularly susceptible in their first winter, although it would probably only cause a cold in an older child or adult.

DS2 was hospitalised with this at 9 weeks for 5 days headbox oxygen and nasogastric feeds every 2 hours to minimise the strain on the body. The cough lasted for weeks - at least 6, and a couple of times I took him back to the doctor, but they assured me he was just what they call a "happy wheezer". It is awful but they do gradually get better and cough less. At 13 months he became a distinctly less happy wheezer and developed virus-induced asthma....
