This is a problem which has gradually got worse over the years (I am 46)
i go the toilet about 10 times a day and often get up 2/3 times in the night.
this is really getting me down as i am always worried about going anywhere where there's no loos. I drink as little as possible but I seem to urinate 3 times more fluid than I intake, how can this be possible?
Does anyone else have the same problem or any advice?

i tend to wee a lot more when i have a bit of extra weight, which is currently at the moment !

janx · 02/11/2011 20:34

I would go to the gp - my friend had this problem and it turned out to be an infection

fedupandalone · 02/11/2011 20:37

It sounds as if you suffer with urgency and frequency.
Reduced fluid intake can exacerbate this problem.
I would see your GP and ask for a referral to Physiotherapy.
They will be able to assess you properly and advise you on a course of treatment

Makingchanges · 02/11/2011 20:37

Have you been to doc? It could be an infection or something like diabetes. I however have the same problem, DH says i tour toilets on holiday like others sightsee. I am also overweight and find this makes it worse. I lost (and put back on) 2 stone this year and there was a noticable difference when I was lighter.

BarbieDahl · 02/11/2011 20:39

I don't think it's an infection - I feel fine otherwise and am not overweight. There's no pain or stinging and i definitely do more than a few drops. Perhaps I just have a very small bladder. I did mention it casually on last gynae check-up but doc didn't seem to think it important.

reducing fluid intake might be worse thing to do

seek help, may be nothing, but raise it again

fedupandalone · 02/11/2011 20:44

Weight can impact on urgency as there is more pressure on the pelvic floor muscles.
A long period of frequent urination can cause the bladder to feel full with less volume.

jollymary · 02/11/2011 22:40

Ask GP to refer you to a Women's Health physio, you can be helped. Is upsetting for you, but incredibly common. best of luck.

janx · 03/11/2011 08:45

my friend had no symptoms either - ask for blood test/urine tests

magso · 03/11/2011 09:22

I am like this - the (slim) toilet tourist! You should see the Gp as others have said and ask for referral onwards. I did not know physios could help. Make sure you fully empty your bladder completely (lean forwards) as that is a problem for some people.

hiddenhome · 03/11/2011 10:26

What type of fluids are you drinking?

What do you drink most of?

My problem went away when I cut out tea. I was ill for months, but the people here suggested cutting out various things and it turned out to be ordinary tea which was causing the problem.

Only drink Evian, milk or pear juice for a few days - these are non irritating - and see if it helps.

crazynanna · 03/11/2011 10:39

I have had this for about 10 years. It's not the stress one...it's the urgency. When I need to go,I have to go...or else wet knickers Sad It got so bad,if I was going anywhere,I had to plan my route on what public toilets' were available, and always took spare pants and trousers. It literally took over my life. Angry. And yes, hardly aby fluid intake, but could pee for England!

Went to GP,had all the checks for UTI...all clear. She said it was something called an Irritable Bladder, and had triggers, for me,Caffeine

I have dramatically cut down coffee (which I love).now only 2 cups before leaving house, and no more. Cola is a massive no-no.

Try and figure out your triggers, because it really reduced my problem. I still get it,but not as much.
Good luck

Thanks for all your messages, i guess i'd better get to the doctors'. On a normal day i drink -
b'fast - cup of tea
lunch- small fruit juice, water, squash, milk or coke
4pm - cup of tea
evening - small glass water or 1 - 2 glasses wine
Diabetes did occur to me
I would hate to give up tea :( and i hardly ever drink coffee

Gosh you are really not drinking very much in a day.
Urologists recommend 30ml per kg. So for instance if you weigh 130 lbs or almost 60 kgs, you should be drinking 1800 ml (or pretty close to the 2 litre figure we often hear about). Dehydration can irritate the mucosal lining of your bladder.
It is considered "normal" to wee about 7/8 times a day and once at night.Your nocturia must interfere with a good night's sleep.
One of the things you might find it helpful to do is keep a bladder diary showing your intake and output (and if possible the exact times) for a couple of days. It is easy to measure your input if you drink out of the same size glass/cup .Measuring output is a bit messier. Often people are NOT asked to measure output but I think it is worthwhile to have some information about the capacity of a bladder. Do you know how much your bladder can hold?. Normal capacity is 300 -400mls, but more is not unusual.

You don't say whether you have any symptoms like leaking, urgency etc.

I wish you luck. ( I recently became an expert on all things bladder related because I had an operation on mine!)

hiddenhome · 03/11/2011 19:56

You're not drinking enough

and

The wine, fruit juice, tea and coke are triggers for many people.

You're not really drinking anything definitely none irritationg apart from the milk perhaps.

Try putting yourself onto the drinks I suggested and certainly increase your fluid intake. It might just be something simple that's causing it, it was with me. I feel like a different person now and only wee about four times a day.

JuliaScurr · 03/11/2011 20:03

If they give you the flow test with electrodes in urethra, make sure you have a prescription for antibiotics. (voice of bitter experience)

BarbieDahl · 07/11/2011 16:21

Electrodes in the urethra, Yikes Shock

Thank you esperance, you sound very knowledgeable on the subject. It's the getting up in the night which really bothers me - I'm sure my sleep is disrupted. I will definitely see GP about it. Thanks to all

Hi crazynanna, if thats all yor drinking then u must still have a bladder problem. Personally i would ask 4 a urodynamics test 2 b done and a ultrasound scan in case u have a prolapsed bladder. Ive never heard of a irritable bladder. b warned the urodynamics test sounds embarrassing. They put cathaters in both ends, im having it done Jan 17th. I dont think my bladders emptying properly. Its better to have it checked out, yor quality of life must b awful. Good luck
