What is the best lotion to use? DD has had nits for about 3 weeks now and we have been doing the wet combing/conditioner and it just isn't getting rid of them. She has now passed them onto me and its really depressing. Trouble is, we will get rid of them and she will get them again when she goes back to school.

I found the nitty gritty comb and lice attack lotion really worked well when my dsd had them, I had tried wet combing and other solutions before that.

ccd - do you comb through everyother night? I also comb for about an hour going over and over each section about 5 x. I also use the nitty gritty comb as well, great for getting little eggs out.

I know this sounds stupid and I hope it doesn't offend you but I always make sure (especially when dd has them) that I tie her hair back and clip it. I do the same with mine to try and stop them spreading.

My Italian friend swears her child has NEVER had nits cos in Italy, they use a diluted vinegar rinse after every shampoo. Apparently the acid 'unglues' the eggs and the smell acts as a repellent against future infestations. I was sceptical, but I now do it too (bog standard malt vinegar 19p a bottle!) and touch wood - a whole term with no nits! It only smells mildly of vinegar for about 5 mins after washing, and the hair is very glossy too

sickofturkey - do you still have to use a special comb to initially get rid of them?

Blandmum · 30/12/2005 10:51

hate to rain on the vinegar parade but in my experience the only thing that will shift them is repeated wet combing. If you read stuff on the internet you can find all sorts of strange stuff, I've even come across people using mayonaise over their kids heads and wrapping them in climg film! But in the end you still have to comb them out anyway.

Plonk the kids in front of a video, bribe them with some sweeties and use cheap old conditioner. Do it every 2-3 days and it will work. I can now do dds hair in 30 minutes....we have had 4 different lots of nits! She has very long hair.

Thanks everyone, we have a good comb that gets them out pretty well, problem is though getting them out of mine. DP will not sit and comb my hair, he refuses to have anything to do with the whole nit thing and I just cannot find them in my hair. I am probably getting rid of them out of DD's hair and then passing them back to her as I am not ridding myself of them. Thats why for me I need a good lotion to kill them off.

oh no, Nickenha , unfortunately you still have to nit-comb regularly!! But vinegar does seem to repel them, ime. Martianbishop - people use mayonnaise??? Really???

My friend does the same with the vinagar. At school they call her little girl Insaladatina (means little salad)

Ahhh

The ONLY thing that will get rid of them for sure is the wet combing method.

It MUST be done at least every 48 hours or more tho to break the life cycle of the nit, as once they hatch they arnt mature enough to lay eggs for 48 hours or so....

so on the first day you are getting rid of the alive creatures, and for the following 2 weeks (the time it takes eggs to hatch) you are getting rid of the babies as they hatch BEFORE they lay more eggs.

You should keep wet combing until at least 2 weeks AFTER you have found your last alive creature anyway (just incase he did manage to lay some egss), but if you do it daily instead of every other day then you are less likely to get any more alive creatures after the 2 weeks.

also be sure to keep all the hair tied back and treat the WHOLE family other wise the problem goes round in circles.

Lots of people suggest regular washing in tea tree shampoo / or a little tea tree oil to the final rinse works as well (the dont like the smell of that either!) im guessing the vinager is the same!

Even once rid of them if they are all going around at school i wuld still do a thorough wet combt at least once a week!

Good luck!
