Maybe I'm horribly behind the times but I've just read this.

So, the science testifies that we should all stop eating meat and dairy. has anyone done this, become essentially vegan?

I'm intrigued to know how big an impact this book has had...

I wouldn't recommend it! My brother's fiance (now ex) is a vegan. She then developed all sorts of in-tolerances and is forever ill. She is constantly taking supplements because the lack of meat in her diet means she is forever anemic with low iron, and the lack of diary means her calcium levels are too low too. She passes out a lot as well and is massively malnourished.

Every so often a new fangled study shows that this is bad and that is bad.

My theory is that we wouldn't have breasts that produce milk if we were not required to feed it and subsequently drink it. And we wouldn't have canine teeth if we were not mean to eat meat.

Actually I do believe the dairy part of it. I don't think we are meant to drink the milk of another animal. Milk is for babies. Baby cows grow much much faster than humans do and there may be a link to consuming cows milk and an overgrowth of cells which is what cancer is. Read Jane plants book you life in your hands for more info.

Meat I am not sure about but meat is heavily processed now and cows are pumped full of hormones to make more milk which can't be good for us.

I wish I could be vegan but I love meat and cheese too much!!

The China Study has been debunked several times - the data was doctored to fit the author's original ideology.

Mummyinggnome · 01/11/2011 18:13

Well I've just googled the china study debunked... Hmmmm...

I guess the answer really is that meat is best consumed a handful of times a month and dairy used sparingly.

It is extraordinary how anyone can write a book based on 'scientific' fact but actually choose which data he uses, therefore proving or disproving any theory you like.

But I like the concept - in moderation! Anyone done it and seen a result. Ie a cancer patient halted the dieases progess via diet alone?

Watch The Food Hospital on channel 4 now.

Our bodies have certainly evolved to digest cow's milk. We have been herding cattle since forever.

I would be more concerned about processed foods and fructose syrups tbh.
