Viral gastroenteritis in toddler

Dear all
As you can tell by the time of night, this is not an x factor thought! My little boy is 2 and 2 months and has basically been sick on and off since last Sunday; but only got really severe on Wednesday night. Been to doc twice who diagnosed viral gastroenteritis ... the thing is, he was not sick ( no diarrhoea at all, in fact hasn't pooed for 3 days nearly) since v early friday morning- thought he was through it, but then last night has big temp again- 38.5 or so, and has been sick again when we give him nurofen or calpol. What to do? Is a temperature in itself dangerous? How long does this last? He is drinking lots and eating ok in the day, but during the night massively hot and vomiting. So want him better and so worried! Thanks all xx

Poor you and DS Sad

I'm not medically qualified, and can only advise as per what I've been told in the past by various doctors I've seen with my own 3.

If he is eating and drinking, is still weeing several times a day (several wet nappies not just a dribble) and has some energy to play then there's little that can be done for a virus. However, if he can't keep anything down at all, isn't weeing and is listless then back to GP/OOH I'd say.

At 38.5 his temperature isn't dangerously high...I was asked to take DD2 to GP/OOH if she hits 40 and can't be reduced through; paracetomol, ibuprofen, stripping her off and sitting in a cool place...but she has febrile convulsions (fever fits) so I don't know if that's why.

Does he have cold symptoms? DD1 always vomits during the night if she's snotty, I guess because she swallows it (bleurgh). I've found it helps to prop her up to nearly sitting with pillows for her to sleep. If he's hot, resist the temptation to cuddle him or wrap him up. Open the window and just cover him with a sheet.

If you're really worried at any time, ring your OOH GP, mine have always been very sympathetic and give good advice over the phone.

Hope he's better soon.

Thanks so so much ballstoit- v helpful advice! He seems a bit better this morning- albeit with a temp. Here's to hoping this horrible virus goes! Big respect to you for doing it with three...! X
