What could be wrong with DS?

DS has been poorly for about a week now. He started off with a high temperature about a week ago. He complained of a sore tongue, and appeared to have some sort of ulcer, (which has gone now).He then started to complain of stomach pain, it comes on mostly in the afternoon/ evening and appears quite bad. He is often rolling around on his bed crying and holding his stomach. We have taken him to A&E twice, they have Xrayed him, but couldnt find anything to suggest the cause of the pain. Will be going to GP tomorrow to ask for refferal to a peadetrician. Any one have any idea what could be causing this?It is very distressing to see him this way.

? Mesenteric Adonitus. My oldest has this but is beginning to grow out of it. She gets stomach pains every time she has a cold/cough or infection. She sometimes finds the pain unbearable, it is easily confused with appendicitus; We treat it with regular calpol and nurofen and hot water bottles.

coribells · 28/12/2005 20:28

He is four. Doesnt have a temperature now. Has had no vomitting or diahaerra. He didnt open bowels for a couple of days, but seems to be regular again now. Tried Calpol but really didnt help much. Strange thing is the pain only lasts for a couple of hours and then he is back to normal again.
Icemum, how did you find out it was 'Mesenteric Adonitus' causing the pain?

fter numerous trips to Gp, xrays bloo test etc, we kept a diary and he pin pointed from this thatthe likely cause is mesonteric adonitus. She has suffered with it since about 5 yaers ol and the last two colds she has had have been relatively stomach pain free, so we hope she is growing out of it.

coribells · 28/12/2005 20:36

Did she have an ultrasound? The A&E suggested that he might need one after referral to paed.

Yes but this came back inconclusive because it was not an emergancy scan and she was well at the time!

spacedonkey · 28/12/2005 20:38

A boy I know suffered from abdominal migraines for a number of years, although he was 12 when these began iirc. The symptoms sound similar though.

coribells · 28/12/2005 20:38

Was her pain constant or did it come and go?

OP posts:
Icemum · 28/12/2005 20:41

Pretty much constant at the beginning and then as she got older was more intermittant. Have you tried him with nurofen as this will reduce the swelling around his glands so making him feel more comfortable?

coribells · 28/12/2005 20:46

Havent been using Nurofen as the first doctor we saw said it was probably the start of Gastroentroitis and that nurofen would make it worse. The doctor at A&E prescribed some though, and I will use it next time he has the pain.

How long did many days did the pain last? DS is on about day 5 now.

'Mesenteric Adonitus' is what they diagnose when it can't be anything else. I either had this or an ovarian cyst pop - they didn't ultrasound me as it went within the required time. It's bloody painful, and like your ds I found it worse in the afternoon or after exercise. I took voltaren for the pain - but I would recommend nurofen for a four year old obviously. I also drank lots of water because that's what you do for the glands in your neck, but that's not scientific.

bobbybobbobbingalong · 28/12/2005 20:47

Well if it's been 5 days with no vomiting then it's not a gastrobug and you are fine with nurofen. I thought mine was food poisoning at first because we had eaten out - actually I started a thread.

I felt terrible for 4 days and rough for another 3.

Icemum · 28/12/2005 20:51

Usually for 2 to 3 days depending on the severity of the cold/cough etc, it may have been longer in the beginning but that was a few years ago now so I can't remember. She never had any D or V with it but it would make her feel very sick.

Heartmum2Jamie · 28/12/2005 20:55

My friends son also suffers with the same symptoms as alot of the other posters have described here. She was also told that it was the glands in his abdomen causing the pain. It must be a common 4 year old thing.

coribells · 28/12/2005 21:24

Thanks everyone, your messages are very reassuring.I will still ask for the referral to the peadetrican but at least I know that what might possibly be wrong is not life or death.

My 5 yr old dd has recently been prescribed Zantac after suffering recurrent tummy pains. When it culminated in vomiting doctor said try this in case she is producing too much acid. Not convinced but have to say she hasn't complained since. Well not until she just got tonsilitis that is but that does cause abdo pain as well. Not a happy bunny (either of us that is).

Daughter had gastric flu about a year ago and was in agony... the pain came on in the evening.. (after being fine during the day) and she would roll about the bed crying and screaming as her belly hurt...
The doctors diagnosed gastric flu but forgot to tell us it could last several days!
This came on after a cold.
The doctor did perscribe something to stop stomach cramps.
will try to find a link for gastric flu...

Hope what ever it is goes away soon

DS still has the pain. I took him to GP yesterday, they want to see him again on Tuesday before making are referral to a peadetrician.

Have been reading about Chron's disease- am a bit worried about this because DS also has had a mouth ulcer at the same time. Which is also a symptom of Chron's.
Anyone know about Chron's in children?

Right we are still having the same problems, the pain isnt as severe any more though, but pretty much there everyday. We have a referral to Peadetrician ( in two weeks.)

We took him A&E again today, because he passed black stools. He was examined and a blood test was taken. (havent had the results yet.) Other that he seems fine and happy.
We are still totally confused.

Anyone with any experience of Chrons? or peadatric ulcers. I just want to get to the bottom of this.
