I know this is a stupid question as it clearly says on the packet no alcohol but would one glass really matter?

sound like an alcholic but exH has really wound me up today and I really fancy a glass of red wine

deffo no alcohol whilst on antibiotics as it will effect it and the antibiotics will not work - unfortunately

think it rather depends on the antibiotic

according to my 4th edition of Ivan Stockley' s 'Drug Interaction ( and you should be warned tat there is a 5th edition)

'no adverse or undesirable interaction normally occurs between alchol and most antibiotics, with the exception of some cepelosporins, griseofulvin and possibly doxycycline and erythromycin succinate '

What are you taking?

lapsedrunner · 28/12/2005 20:27

Have to confess I have always ignored the antibiotic/alcohol bit and never had a problem.

Blandmum · 28/12/2005 20:28

This is a common misunderstanding for most (but not all) antibiotics

lapsedrunner · 28/12/2005 20:30

........and I am on antibiotics right now and still no problems (& chest condition has cleared up). .

QueSerahSerah · 28/12/2005 21:29

One doctor said to me after he prescribed some antibiotics that "you know how everyone says not to drink with antibiotics? Well there are very few of them that will actually make you ill. These are one of them. You will not die but you will feel like you are, or wish you were". I believe that Antabuse is actually an antibiotic and that is how that works (I think).

For a completely different set of antibiotics I was prescribed the doctor advised me the best time inbetween taking an antibiotic and drinking. I seem to recall that may have been New Year too.

I would ask your doctor if MartianBishop hasn't got it in her book. (I doubt a 4th edition would say it was fine and the 5th edition advise teetotalism)

its Metronidazole

clearly says no alcohol and was told it would make me feel nauseus and maybe even vomit

all Im bothered about is being able to have a drink New years Eve (Sat)

if I take last tablet Friday night will I be OK Sat night

"Patients taking metronidazole must avoid consuming alcohol in any form (including cough syrup), as it will react badly with the medication, leading to severe nausea and cramping."

just found this in google

wont be drinking then !!

OP posts:
blondehelen · 28/12/2005 22:28

just googled it. The half life (the amount of time it takes to be out of your system) of metronidazole is about 7-8 hrs,so you should be ok by Saturday. Roll on the alcohol

MrsMiggins · 28/12/2005 22:32

oh thanks for that!!
I was told that 5 days would be more than adequate so stopping Sat is perfectly OK

probably just as well as the way I felt when H left, I would have drunk more than one glass which would have meant a long day at work tom

thanks for helping out

you have to remember how long alcohol stays in the system before taking the next tablet in the morning though blondehelen.
