I've got an itchy rash - what could it be?

It's like little red pinpricks around my tummy button, and I have also got a patch on the back of my neck, and one on my collarbone (where my feeding bra clips on).

I guess I shall be dropping in to my GPs tomorrow and exposing my gross post-child belly for their perusal - but anyone know what it could be?

Somebody, Giraffe? posted a great chart that sorted out all the different rashes, it is withing the last few days

Heartmum2Jamie · 28/12/2005 19:19

was it this? Rash Flow Chart

Blandmum · 28/12/2005 19:21

That is the one.

Just a thought but could it be a reaction to a metal (eg. the back of the button on your jeans, clasp on your necklace)??
DP has a problem with the buttons on jeans and has to put tape on the back of them otherwise he gets an itchy rash around his belly button

Misspiggy · 28/12/2005 22:24

Same here Miaou - both my hands are covered in these pinpricks plus various "dots" around my body plus a big patch has appeared on my chest this morning?! I've had it for about 5 days and it's driving me crazy! Have you tried anti-histamine tablets yet? I have and they have made no difference. Think I'll have to give in and go to the Dr's tomorrow.

Agree with Hornbag - definitely sounds like an allergy to metal (nickel most likely).

Miaou · 29/12/2005 13:55

Have just been to the docs. He thinks it could be .... scabies!!!!! Am mortified. He tried to reassure me by saying that they see loads of it in the surgery and that it doesn't mark you out as a social pariah anymore, but I am still mortified.

Hornbag- wow- always wondered why my tummy button was so bad / scarred, never occurred to me, dunce that I am, it was the metal (can only wear silver and titanium). Doh.

Mincepiedermama · 29/12/2005 15:16

Come back everyone. You can't catch it through the computer.

Miaou I had this at college but it was between my fingertips. It spread like wildfire around the college so you need to wash sheets etc.

Miaou · 29/12/2005 15:32

Thanks spidey - I got the feeling I was being avoided...!

Misspiggy · 29/12/2005 18:31

Oh Miaou, don't be mortified, I was only reading something the other day that scabies is becoming more commonly seen these days! What did he give you for it? (I'm still itching like crazy BTW as I couldn't get an appt today!)

throckenholt · 29/12/2005 19:16

ouch !

A friend of mine had it a few years back - and if I remember rightly it took a few weeks to clear completely.

Miaou · 29/12/2005 20:21

I've got (IIRC) Denbac-M, which we have used in the past to treat headlice (I know, I know, parasite city round here) and didn't completely clear it, so I am a little dubious. However it was the only one the GP was happy for us to use as I am breastfeeding and we need to treat ds who is only five months! He also prescribed us anti-histamines to help with the itching and a bug-buster kit in case the headlice return - we left the pharmacy with a carrier bag!

Hope you haven't got it too misspiggy - just the thought of being invaded by beasties is making me nauseous

OP posts:
Misspiggy · 29/12/2005 20:32

After I read your post I googled an image of scabies (do I know how to have fun or what?!) and one of the pics does look similar to my hands but from what it said about areas usually affected made me wonder. DH was making noises about single beds as he went out tonight...such a comedian. Hope you're getting more sympathy!

Miaou · 29/12/2005 20:37

Not really misspiggy - dh reckons he habours all the bugs and beasties and passes them on to me without being affected himself - grr

OP posts:
Miaou · 29/12/2005 20:40

if you google scabies on images you get lots of pictures of scabies where a man wouldn't want it - maybe I should show that to dh - he might not laugh so much then!

Miaou - sympathy - ds2 had these a couple of years ago, they do carry on itching for a while after even if the Derbac has killed the mite. Also a word of warning if anyone has excema - Derbac can make it much worse as we learned to our cost

Misspiggy · 29/12/2005 20:52

ROFL Miaou! That was one of the first pics that came up (so to speak )when I searched. Can you imagine how uncomfortable that must be?! I reckon showing him would definitely stop any more smart remarks from your DH!

EliBeentoSantasGrotto · 29/12/2005 21:12

Ouch, poor Miaow! My best pal at college had it (flatmate at the time, and no one else caught it - can be done) and I have wild memories of her having to be painted all over with something, and wandering around the flat starkers while it dried. Hope you don't have to do that in this weather !
