Mirena good or bad?

I know there have been endless posts about this coil but here goes another one. I have had one in for over ten years and am starting to think it is not as good as I previously thought.

I suffered from very bad PMS and when i saw the GP about this I was told the Mirena would sort it out and would help control my mood at that time of month. So it seemed like a good idea at the time to have it.

I am still having mood swings, I have been put on prozac for stress and anxiety and no matter how much exercise I do (which is more than the average person) I never lose a pound.

I just wonder how much of this is caused by the coil or is it just me looking for excuses for what i have become.

I struggled with all sorts of contraception for years, but I found the Mirena by far the best.
I was a professional athlete for years and found that I put weight while on the pill (amongst other great side effects) but I was fine on the coil.
I had it for 4 years and would use it again if I ever needed to. I honestly found nothing bad to say about it!
However, I realise that contraception is a very personal choice and different people respond to different hormones and levels completely unpredictably. (As for mood swings and anxiety attacks, I seemed to have before, during and especially after coming off it, but that could be because my life was a mess :) )
Good luck with whatever you choose!

I had mine taken out three weeks ago. I'd had it in for 18 months.

It disagreed with me for the following reasons:

  • I was starting to feel very very sad, all of the time.
  • Complete loss of libido.
  • My post-baby weight was not shifting at all. I'd lost lots of weight with my first 2 dcs while bf-ing and I couldn't shift the weight from dc3, despite running 15ish miles a week. I've still been living in my post-natal size jeans almost 2 years on and they're falling apart Grin
  • Finally, I was losing masses of hair - even more than when bf-ing, which was a lot.

I already feel much better, although this might be psychological as it's not been long since having it taken out, but i'm feeling optimistic that things will improve!

Have you had the same one in for 10 years? I was told mine would need to be replaced after 6 years.

no I am on my third one but some friends have mentioned the side effects and am now starting to question it.
