Copper Coil, any positive experiences?

I'm getting one fitted tomorrow but I've made the mistake of doing lots of googling reviews research and have come across nothing but horror stories of 10 day periods every two weeks, clots, cramps and all kinds of twinges and pains.

Does anyone have any positive experiences to share, please, before I change my mind and cancel my appointment!!

I have had mine in for 3 months and bar a bit of bleeding at the start have had no problems. Slightly heavier and longer periods but manageable.

Compared to the problems I had mirena (mega weight gain, spots, hormones etc) that is nothing. Best contraception I've has.

clopper · 26/10/2011 17:13

I have had several of these over the years and have had no problems with them. My periods are quite heavy, but they always were before the coil. A bit heavier again now probably as I'm 47. Tried a mirena coil once but couldn't get on with it, it seemed to make me emotional and put on weight, so reverted back to a copper coil. Hope this one will see me to the end of my fertility!

Had not has. Damn iPod

HettyAmaretti · 26/10/2011 17:17

Me! I love mine. Have had no problems at all, periods are actually lighter and less painful the before DC1 and between DC1 & 2. Insertion was not much different to a smear although it did take longer, wasn't painful and I had NO bleeding / cramping / pain afterward.

I had mine fitted 6 weeks postpartum (I think, as soon as was allowd in any case). I was BF so it had 8 or 10 months to settle down before I had my first period. No idea if that made a difference or is relevant though.

It's such a relief to be free of the side effects of hormonal contraception.

HettyAmaretti · 26/10/2011 17:19

I was advised to take ibroprufen 20 mins before my appointment and have someone to drive me home in case I felt faint (which I didn't).

HettyAmaretti · 26/10/2011 17:20

Also, I claimed terrible pain and stayed in bed for the rest of the day (was either that or run about after newborn and 20 month old). TBH I think that probably helped.

PeskyPiskie · 26/10/2011 17:23

I've had mine in now for 5 years post DS and had one for 4 years between DD and DS. I have had no problems, my periods are the same as before, it hurt a little to have inserted, but no more than an uncomfortable smear. I also think its great to be without hormonal interference.

pud1 · 26/10/2011 17:35

I had mine fitted a year ago. No pain at all when fitted but after I had really strong period like pain for about 2 weeks. I took painkillers and they did help a bit. I then had heavier than usual periods for about 3 months. Then I was back to normal although I am now regular which I never was before. I would say that it is by far the best contraception I have used

TooEasilyTempted · 26/10/2011 17:52

Nice to hear some good things, thanks everyone! I can cope with a bit of discomfort on insertion and my periods are really light at the moment, I'm not really fussed about heavier periods but I definitely couldn't be doing with the constant bleeding/spotting I've been reading about.

I guess it's one of those things where if you're having problems with it you are more likely to go in search of others in the same boat and share your horrific experiences on the internet but not many people feel the need to do that if they're just getting on well with it. Smile

Brilliant - much better than Mirena which I had taken out after a year's continuous bleeding.

TooEasilyTempted · 27/10/2011 21:13

Well I survived! Coil inserted successfully (the 10 year one) and I have to say with not even much discomfort, just a slight pinch and a twinge and it was done. I've been told to expect some period type cramps this evening but have had nothing so far - though that could be because of the paracetamol and wine Grin

Hetty i like your thinking and have told DH that I have been advised to take it easy for a day or two. He's loading the dishwasher and fetching me more wine as I type

Hope you'll find it's as good as i do!

I'm on my 2nd, 1 between DD2 and DS, and this one. My periods are lighter, and now last 4 days as opposed to 6-7.

Good plan on taking it easy, i wish i'd have thought of that when i had mine put in! :o

tempertemper · 27/10/2011 21:26

I've got one (had it for about 3 years now) and I love it. I am about a stone lighter than I was when I had the pill, without effort. I love not having hormonal effects.

My first few periods were horrifically heavy though, now much much better so try and stick with it. Ask for tranexamic acid if your periods are heavy with it - cuts the bleeding by about half (and you only take it on the days the bleeding is heavy).

creepypantsandzombierags · 28/10/2011 14:39

I've had mine for almost a year. The first 3 or 4 periods I had with it were truly horrendous...not pain but very heavy bleeding. They have settled down a lot but are still longer and heavier than before. I find it a pain but worth putting up with as our only other contraceptive option would be condomns.

Good luck Smile

TooEasilyTempted · 28/10/2011 17:08

I don't want to tempt fate but it all seems ok so far. No pain at all, no discomfort and just a little bit of pink coloured discharge today. I'm planning on doing an update in a few months after my first couple of periods. It would be good for anyone who did what I did,'googling' info, to find a thread that (hopefully) isn't full of extreme horror stories! Smile

I should probably mention that I've been 'hormone free' for about 4 years now, DH and I have been using condoms quite happily but for some bizzare reason have had 2 epic condom failures 2 months in a row (both times came off and ended up inside me). First time i took Levonelle, this time i thought enough is enough so I've actually had the coil fitted as emergency contraception.

I wonder whether having been hormone free with very regular very light periods, this might mean my periods settle a bit quicker?... We shall see!

Hi, I’ve had the copper coil fitted couple of weeks ago. Just wondering how OP is getting along? I know this is an old thread so may not get answers...
