I am so fed up of coughing. Had a cold for over a week now. Most other symptoms went within a couple ofdays. But I still have cattargh on my throat/chest and a horrid persisitent cough that will not go. It's there most of the day. However, it gets much worse at night, esp when I lay in bed. I am getting maximum of 4 hours sleep a night because of it and I am tired and fed up. And it really hurts my chest. I feel really run down, tired, grumpy and achy with it.

Any great remedies for trying to soothe it or get rid of it?

Does it leave a nasty taste in your mouth? Sounds like a chest infection tbh. I would go to the doc's to get it looked at.

Not sure about a nasty taste. Just leaves me hot and flustered and my chest hurting.

Might try and make an appointment tomorrow just in case. Just don't want to be seen as a time waster, going with what is probably just a cold.

The medicine - Pholocodeine - is really good for persistent coughs, you can get it at the chemist and it is cheap. The codeine relaxes the throat muscles and makes you a bit sleepy which really helps at night. Do get it checked at the drs if you think you have a chest infection though.

Hope you're soon feeling better.

Raise your head - if you can't raise one end of the bed, use an extra pillow or two. Go to bed with a "coughing kit":

  • have a glass of water by the bed to sip when you need to.
  • suck cough sweets in the night - mouth v furry in the morning but worth it if it helps.
  • take cough medicine in the night when coughing attacks start.
  • steam inhalation using Olbas Oil.

I used all of these things when I had the same thing a few weeks ago. It's horrible but it will pass. Hope you feel better soon.

Have tried raised pillows, vapour rub stuff on chest, olbas oil, drinking water all night and the sweets. Not tried cough medicine yet - I will call at chemist tomorrow.

I am just weary from lack of sleep. It is reminding me of those early days when DD was tiny.

You poor thing - I know exactly how you feel.

Pindy is Pholocodeine still available??? I ask as a lot of chemists have discontinued it around where I am, dp used to swear by it, it makes you bring up all the mucus though ...bleurrgh but makes coughs disappear ultra fast.

pindy · 27/12/2005 22:26

yes it is - I got some on Saturday at Boots! Has worked wonders over the last few days!!!

Well, I have still got this dreaded cough. Tried to go to G but my first appointment was cancelled. Now got on for Wednesday afternoon at 4:40pm. Fed up with it. It isn't so bad during the day - there but not really too much of a bother. But it is horrid at night. Seem to have a lot of cattargh that I am coughing up wth it. Tried lots fothe suggestions before and nothing has really helped it. Still feel tired and fed up with it, and it hurts after a bit too.

It is affecting me day to day, especially when at work. Seem to be out of breath quicker. And as for the gym - it nearly killed me!!! Mind you - could be that I am unfit too.

So, any new suggestions?
