Is it conjunctivitis?

Hi there. My ds is ten months. During today one of his eyes appeared to have tears coming out of it, but when it dried it went like a yellowy crust, and in the corner it had a yellow creamy residue. If its conjunctivitis, will it need antibiotics? Or can i get drops? I've never had it, hence the dumb questions

Have just got over my first bout of it too.
Doctor gave me some antibiotic eye drops...but also said you can buy them over the counter. Not sure if they are suitable for children thoug.

In the meantime - wipe the eye clear with water boiled and cooled.

good luck.

Antibiotics are only any good if it's bacterial conjunctivitis and not viral. You will need to see the GP or the pharmacist to find out which sort he has got in order to get the right treatment.

If you still have breastmilk it really is the best thing - especially when all the shops are shut!

They sell Chloramphenicol over the counter for conjunctivitis. Again, not sure if your DS is too young. Have to take him to the pharmacist with you or they won't sell it to you anyway.

Certainly sounds like the correct diagnosis. It's very contagious though so wash your hands before and after cleaning his eyes and keep any other children at arms length from him.

i'll take him to Boots tomorrow, thanks so much for the advice.

Also, wash all sheets etc as its very easy to re-infect!

My dts came down with it a few days ago, even though they had just turned 2, they still would'nt sell them to me, Had to go to the gp, probably because they are so small, dont think they believed that they were 2years
