First vaccination and cloth nappy user - polio query

Hi - not sure if this is the right forum!

After first vaccinations today I was told to take care disposing of nappies as the polio vaccine was live. As I use cloth, I am using terries for the moment and boil washing them. However, some poo got on the wrap - these have a max wash temp of 60 - any suggestions? DH suggested soaking in milton first but I didn't know if this affected the elastic. How long is the polio live for? Will a 60 wash suffice?

(BTW - as a new mummy, the jags were a deeply traumatic experience for me, as his face crumpled. Oh dear!!!)

I'd be grateful if anyone could advise . . .

Thanks!

Hi New Mummy,

Was it an injected polio vaccine - if so no problems. If it was an oral vaccine I don't know the answer to the wraps question. We had a case in NZ when a mum caught polio from her babies nappy because she did not have immunity. That was oral polio and as a result it has been changed.

Blimey. They never told me that!

60 degrees is enough to sterilise the wraps though.

60 degrees should be fine to see off polio. TBH unless you have immunity problems I wouldn't worry unduly (and as any regulars will know I'm very cynical about immunisation- this is not a brush off).

If you do have immunity problems then things become more serious and I would chick the wrap- but this should be discussed before vaccination.

Just been reading a bit about this tonight coincidentally and the book I was reading said polio continues to be egested for 3 weeks

Newmummy, not sure about the Polio but I have washed DS2's wraps (Motherease) at 95 on occasion (when he has had a tummybug) with no ill effects if that helps.

I was told that when DS had his polio vaccine and they gave me a booster at the same time. However they didn't tell me to send DH to get a booster which I thought was odd as he changed DS' nappy as often as I did.
My mum nursed a man who caught polio a month after his baby had the live vaccine ... (this was way back in the 60s) ... not a happy story I have to say ...
