Do you have kids who are almost never ill? What do you put that down to?

I am interested in why some kids hardly ever get ill. If this is your child, what do you put it down to?

Mine. It's luck. And dirt. And maybe genes cos I never get ill either.

My dd is rarely ill, whereas ds catches everything. Both were breasted for well over a year but ds sucks his thumb and is a much fussier eater- those are the only differences I can think of. It's possibly just down to luck!

My children never get ill because they are genetically superior.

Does anyone with healthy kids keep a very clean house?
Do the healthy kids eat fruit and veg?
Does going to bed at a reasonable time keep you healthier do you think?

We have 4 kids who are very rarely ill enough not to go to school/nursery. Maybe once every 1-2 years per child?
DH and I are rarely ill, they get lots of outdoor exercise, we have pets, they rarely wash their hands and the house is a tip.

It is LUCK and fuck all else.

Dont kid yourselves.

Unless a child is actually neglected, starved, stuffed with crap, beaten or deliberately made sick

It is all down to the luck of the draw

I have 2 DD's, one hardly eats anything, very picky about fruit and veg. The other eats everything really good diet, but both are really healthy and don't get ill. So although I'm sure having a good diet helps its not the only factor.
I am obsessively clean, washing soft toys every week when they were little, so they weren't exposed to germs to build up their immunity. They are both in schools were there are loads of bugs but they don't ever seem to pick them up the worst we have had is a running node. Neither has ever had antibiotics.

So in a nutshell I don't know - luck I think may be the answer.

Luck - can't think what else it would be.

Both my DC have had chicken pox and DS1 got hand, foot and mouth disease when he was 2 but other than that, neither of them have had any thing other than the usual colds and coughs which have little impact on them.

DS1 is 5 and I have only taken him to the doctors maybe twice and DS2 is almost 3 and has never needed to go to the doctors. However, I am aware that I hate going to the doctors so they do need to be VERY ill for me to go Wink

They were both bottle-fed from birth and have been in nursery 3 or 4 days a week since they were 6-8 months old so it can only be luck Smile

However, myself and DH are rarely ill so maybe it is genetic?

I have one DC who is hardly ever ill, and two others who get colds etc sometimes. I put it down to my congenital smugness.

I have just seen your last post:

Our house is just clean - not spotless by any stretch of the imagination.
My 2 love fruit but not so keen on veg - I would be surprised if they had 5 a day.

ceebeegeebies - the kids I am talking about are the ones that don't seem to get "the usual coughs and colds"

DS1 (11) is almost never ill. I put it down to him having caught 99% of the available viruses while at nursery. DS2 (2) is in the process of catching them all while at nursery.

I can disprove all your theories.

DDs 1 & 2 brought up in same house in same circumstances. Both never ill.

DD1 always slept well. DD2 didn't

DD1 ate well. DD2 didn't

I BF them both but chucked in a bit of formula from 6 months ish. I weaned at 4 months (guidelines at the time). And I worked.

My 9 year old DS is very rarely ill. What he does catch isn't enough for him to need to stay off school anyway (odd cold, and he catches coldsores from his dad grrr). I have never needed to take a days carers leave off work ever.
I didn't breastfeed him. I do keep a clean house as much as I possibly can, but he stays at his dads house too - who doesn't keep his house that clean!!!!
He does have eczema though, which I do wonder if he was breastfed would he have still been affected.
Luck I think - though I don't catch much either - I think I have built up resistance working in a health care setting over the last 7 years. Who knows!!!

I am personally putting it down to them eating their bogies..
They seem to get a sniffle but not a full blown cold, a slight cogh from time to time but not an infection.
Aparently there has been some research done about bogie eating iirc it is something to do with the body consuming a little bit of the germs and learning how to deal with them before they get a huge dose? Or something like that??

NOW don't get me wrong I am not encouraging the boys to do it, but am not that worried about it either.

DD had one bout of croup and a couple of colds.

She got cancer when she was 12 and then died.

I dont think how clean/dirty my house is or many bananas she ate had anything to do with it.

As I said - luck
