Plesae don't laugh..DH has persistent hiccups which are making him sick - any ideas what it could be (I've checked the sherry bottle so we can rule that one out!)

Seriously, he has had this on and off for over a fortnight. He gets the most violent hiccups I've ever seen which in turn make him feel sick and sometimes actually make him vomit. He also says he feels as if there is something stuck in his oesophagus (sp?)as if he had wolfed down a meal too quickly. Any ideas what this could be and what might help until he can get an appt to see the Dr? Will check back in a couple of hours as am off to do battle with the housework TIA

my daughter experienced something similar to this when she was a baby, turned out to be acid reflux and she gained a wheeze for months, but it could be a number of things so i think the best bet is to take him to the docs but until then check out the NHS website

www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk

I use this all the time it's really helpful.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 23/12/2005 10:32

Get him to the Doctor today, that is going to ruin his Christmas.

Kelly1978 · 23/12/2005 10:34

sounds nasty, try gaviscon. Also a great cure for hiccups is to take seven sips of something - water or whatever. Swallow seven times and it clears up the hiccups. Works everytime for me without fail, might be worth a try. Good luck with the drs.

jinglinggoblin · 23/12/2005 10:38

snog him. a really good snog often stops hiccups. if you can get one of his mates to do it then that adds the surprise element aswell so is even more effective

i sometimes go through stages of really awful hiccups, they really hurt sometimes. of course everyone else usually finds it highly amusing, your dp is very lucky to have a dw who isnt just rofl at him

Chandra · 23/12/2005 10:52

if it has been gone for that long he ahs to be seen by a doctor, not all hiccups are inoffensivve spams, they can get very nasty. I have an uncle who was hospitalised for several days because the hiccups where really interfering with other more vital functions.

EliBeentoSantasGrotto · 23/12/2005 10:57

I used to get horrendous hiccups as a kid (no sherry there either) so I sympathize, poor DH. I also agree with him seeing a Dr: doesn't sound like ordinary hiccups, and all things out of the ordinary should be checked out. Acid reflux can definitely do it, and for what its worth I find gripe water (don't laugh) helpful for bad hiccups - but really, get him to see a GP soon.

Found a link for you, some tips/ideas here...

Ugh, sorry, can't get it to 'link' properly. Anyway, try googling for patient.co.uk if you want to check it out!

Misspiggy · 23/12/2005 11:06

Thanks everyone. He has just phoned the Drs who can give him an appt this afternoon which is really lucky (especially after what happened with your uncle Chandra)and I'm going out soon to stock up on Gaviscon (thanks Kelly!). Have told him about your idea goblin and he seems quite keen (on me snogging him, not his mate of course )Must admit I did have the odd snigger in the beginning but he gets in such a state the novelty has worn off, plus when it happens at 2am I'm more on the verge of thumping him than laughing at him, just call me Florence Nightingale!

Possibly caused by a chest infection. This happened to my DH. The hiccups stopped as soon as he was on antibiotics.

Good luck at docs.

SJ xx

Any news ???

Misspiggy · 23/12/2005 19:44

Hi!The Dr thinks it's probably dyspepsia (a kind of acid reflux thing)so has given DH some acid reducing tablets to take and he has to go back in a week. He also has to avoid all rich food...so much for those mince pies and brandy butter eh? He still feels rough and is sitting beside me feeling sorry for himself saying he couldn't possibly manage the last minute Tesco shop tomorrow morning...hmmm!

Tell him, women have babies, and to get over it

Misspiggy · 23/12/2005 19:59

V tempting but seeing as it's the season of goodwill to all (wussy!) men I'll go easy on him tonight so he can build himself up for lugging all those carrier bags tomorrow

Phew, well, at least thats easily treated! More than can be said for the last minute Tesco shop....hope he's feeling stronger in time.

Misspiggy · 23/12/2005 23:56

Oh, he will be better in time.... BTW Eli, the Dr gave DH a printout of the page you gave the link to which I had printed off for him before he went to the Dr's. DH was v impressed with the standard of advice given on MN
