there is so much of this going around. both my elder two have been having fever on and off for a week or so as well. there really isn't much you can do except give them calpol when the fever is noticeably high, and try and have a fairly quiet time of it, early beds etc, until they have shaken it off.
horrid, isn't it?
hope he gets better soon...

just thought the fever was dragging on a bit. He has seem to taken an aversion to calpol , and makes himself sick after having it.

oh no!
can you try baby nurofen which tastes different? although not quite so effective at reducing fever, it is better than nothing.

cori · 27/10/2003 20:49

he also had a really bad rash for a couple of days , but thats gone now.

Have you tried using Calpol and Nurofen? You give a dose of Calpol then three hours later, a dose of Nurofen. It's a bit hard to describe but your day might look like this.

6am Calpol
9am Nurofen
Noon Calpol
3pm Nurofen
6pm Calpol
9pm Nurofen

I hope your ds is better soon - I hate those ubiquitous viruses that abound in autumn.

suedonim · 27/10/2003 22:00

Oops, missed your second message about not liking Calpol so that's no use, sorry!

Had a bad night last night. His Temp. went up to 39.4 gave him nurofen , which didnt do much , then stripped him down open windows and then sponged him, and eventually forced Calpol upon him , in the end it all worked together, his temp went down to 37.5. he slept well for the rest of the night. He is fine this morning , no temp at all ,seems happy.
I dont know whether i should take him back to the GP , as his temp shot up after having a low grade fever, could indicate a secondary infection, but as i said is fine this morning. WHat to do?

Is there a different GP you can try at the same surgery? IME some are brilliant with children and very reassuring. Others would make better vets.

DS seems full of beans as the morning progresses. There is another GP i could try, i will see how the day goes.

I went though the same with Ds when he was around 8 months. He seemed to have a fever on and off for months. He had just started nursery and I had stopped bf so I guess that was part of the reason he seemed to get a bit of a virus-attack.....
The GP told us not to worry as long as ds seemed fine in himself (he wasn't loosing weight and didn't seem to be ill except the constant fevers). However, we were really worried and eventually asked for a referral to a private doctor. They did all kinds of tests and determined he was fine. We had to pay quite a lot, but piece of mind when it coems to your kids don't have a price.....Perhaps if you have private cover, you could ask for a referal too?

I also find that it helps to take them out in fresh air. Take them out and about and give them something else to think about. Plenty of wanter and fruit.....

Hope he gets better soon!

Cori - if ds continues to improve, no need to go back to GP. However, if he continues to spike a temperature through the medication then get him seen again tomorrow. The rash and temperature sound as though he has had a virus therefore will take a few days to recover. He should steadily improve now.

cori · 29/10/2003 10:20

i did take him back to the GP yesterday, was given antibiotics with instructions not to start using them until this evening if there is no improvment. He was fine over night, seems happy this morning though a little bit hot.
thanks for all your support , its good to know there are people with the same experiences at the other end of the keyboard.

cori my ds had a virus over the last week.
Dh took him to out of hours and the doc said it was a nasty one.
One minute they would be great, next all hot and feel awful. He wouldnt take calpol and he usually loves that.
The doc gave us a week for him to get better and he was right.

Hope your little one is feeling better today
