sickness and teething - do they go together?

My ds (7+months) has just got his 1st tooth and 2nd on the way. These seem to be causing him considerable pain and night waking, just about manageable with calpol. He has also started throwing up a bit and he has never been a sicky baby. For the last few days it's been getting more frequent and smellier, i.e. proper sick rather than posset (is that the right term?). Do teething and sickness go hand in hand or has he got two nasties at once? He doesn't seem ill as such but it's very odd for him to be sick.

Not in my experience. Perhaps he has picked up a little bug. Have you thought of ringing your HV?

followthestarlover · 20/12/2005 21:18

it could be the calpol... ds tends to be sick on that.

Mine have never been sick when they were teething, although they did have runny stools.
There is a gastric bug doing the rounds ATM, so it may be that he has picked something up.

Funnily enough, I've been a bit suspicious about the Calpol, followthestarlover. It's possibly always been after medicine that he's been sick. I've also got nurofen so maybe I'll stick to that and see if it makes a difference. He doesn't seem to be 'throwing up' in the way I think of as being ill with it so I don't think it's a bug, it's just as if he's got a fizzy tummy or queasiness. It helps to know it's not a teething thing. If it persists or is the same with nurofen I'll give the doc a call. He's fortunately not sick enough for worries about hydration or anything. Many thanks for such quick help.

i also tend to use nurofen and someone on here said that it can be harder on their tummies than calpol.... ds has never been sick with nurofen, but i did suspect that it was giving him a tummy ache!

so try not to give it on an empty tummy if possible!

it's a minefield isn't it?

You could also try an own-brand infant paracetamol - Boots do a colour-free orange flavoured one.

Now you've really got me thinking. All this has really kicked off in the last few weeks as these teeth have been coming through. He's always slept 7.30 until at least 3ish since he was 6 weeks old. Recently he's been waking regularly around 10-11pm. Some nights it seems like tummy and some nights teeth. Some nights I think I'm probably losing my marbles and trying to find a reason for everything when it's all just coincidence. It sure is a minefield. Hopefully it'll all settle down again soon and the smiles will return for a bit, at least until the top teeth start to come down.

Just wrote this on another thread.

Just be aware that teething will not cause fever, or any real pain - I was told this by a Ped. Consultant at a top London hospital. According to him, there are lots of myths about teething and for the most part they are all a load of rubbish. The only teeth that do cause discomfort are the back molars that come in round about 2 1/2.

best to visit the doctor - check ears etc.

Just to update - no painkillers needed today and guess what? Absolutely no sickness, not a dribble. Fantastic. Thanks for the advice re. calpol. I've got some plain paracetamol suspension for next time.
