SICK - that nasty bug that's going round...

but how do you get the blasted smell out of the carpet. Are there any domestic goddesses that know of a remedy. I have a vague feeling that bicarbonate of soda does something for smells, but not sure what....

BTW there should be a cleaning and housework topic the amount of discussion that goes on about it here!

Isn't vinegar meant to help get rid of the smell?
You have my sympathies having to deal with this. My family had it last week.

WigWamBam · 20/12/2005 16:40

You can either sprinkle bicarbonate of soda onto it, leave it for a few hours then hoover it up, or you can use equal parts white vinegar and water and scrub the carpet with it.

I am dreading my kids getting it, not too good with tummy bugs!!! The only thing I hate about being a Mum.

k74 · 20/12/2005 16:57

Sick is one of things that I always thought
' oh when it's your child you won't mind it' .

Turns out it is just as gross when it's your child, plus YOU have to clear up! Plus feel really sorry for dd...

Oh bless her, how old is she? When they are little they don't understand so its not so bad.

DD is 5 and she gets upset when she feels sick but DS who's 3 doesn't care.

k74 · 20/12/2005 18:10

She's 6 so old enough to know. Have been starving her cos she can't even keep water down at the moment. She keeps asking why she can't have any lunch when everyone else is.

Damn carpet making me want to heave. Getting wafts every time I walk past...

My DS1 is 6 too & he had the bug last week.
He really hates being sick & tries to fight it, which often leads to him throwing up somewhere that requires me doing loads of washing!
It is a horrible bug. I hope your DD is soon feeling better.

SaintGeorge · 21/12/2005 13:30

Talc sprinkled on the offending patch and brushed into the pile before hoovering up is great. Wait until the cleaned area is as dry as possible first though.

SantasSandyBalls · 21/12/2005 13:42

It's a nasty bug isn't it. DD (4) threw up all over the shop assistant's feet in Curry's on Sunday . Felt obliged to buy the more expensive dishwasher

Rudolphthebluenosedteddy · 21/12/2005 14:07

Ohps!! Bet the assistant was a bit taken aback!!
I thought it was all over in our house, seen as H & DS1 were last sick last Tuesday...but no - DS2 threw up in his cot last night - a whole week after his brother! Knowing my luck, I will get it for Christmas!

Detta · 22/12/2005 12:30

My sympathies - DS has been up all night with this. Washing powder/liquid is supposed to break down enzymes (or something like that) so is very good for getting rid of the smell. Hope this helps and happy christmas all!

Misspiggy · 22/12/2005 13:23

ROFL at SSB - hope the dishwasher is worth the extra money!! We all had this last Xmas. I cooked Xmas lunch and then retired to the bathroom for the rest of the day and left poor DH with my mum who hates him with a vengeance (sp?)Even the kids deserted him! Isn't it called Winter vomiting disease? Talk about "it does exactly what it says on the tin" I found that good old Shake and Vac left on the stain for as long as poss before hoovering really helped with the smell.

Rudolphthebluenosedteddy · 22/12/2005 13:31

Yes it is called The winter vomiting virus & it is combined with flu like symptoms.

k74 · 22/12/2005 13:34

DH got some 1001 no vacuum foam stuff in an aersol. Now the whole house smells like parma violet sweeties.. but preferable to sick.
