10 week old DD has a lump in her groin...?

Just wondering if anyone had any ideas what it might be... It's about an inch in from her right hip joint on that pad of fat that sits above the vagina (you know, the pubic hair region) it's about the size of a small pickled onion, but it's well buried under the fat and can only be felt if you press.. there definately isn't one at the other side.... she had her hips checked last week so it can't be that... please tell me it's a swollen gland or something!!

Not panicking yet, but might be if left to dwell on it!

A hernia?

Marneychristmas · 18/12/2005 17:06

Has she had any vactionations? Is it neer where she had a jab?

FastasleepInAManger · 18/12/2005 17:11

It's not near where she had her jabs... they definately don't jab them there!! It doesn't look funny at all, it was just as I was rubbing cream on her after a bath that I noticed it, do hernias look odd?

Actually, I think girls can have umbilical hernias (near their tummy button)and boys can have hernias further down in the groin. It's not that then! Maybe it's a lymph node you can feel.

FastasleepInAManger · 18/12/2005 17:17

Should I take her to the doctors? Is it bad to have a swollen lymph node? Argh!

girls can have inguinal hernias, just less common. is it bigger when she cries? anyway, yes go to doc to make sure.

tamum · 18/12/2005 17:21

My (not very educated) guess would be a ganglion . Harmless, but worth getting it checked. Keep on not panicking!

FastasleepInAManger · 18/12/2005 17:23

I don't really press on her groin when she's crying very often lol... my mum had a hernia when she was a baby... I thought they looked funny...oh I'm all befuddled now, I'll call the docs tomorrow!

So long as she seems well to you, ie feeding, weeing regularly, pooing and has no temperature, I wouldn't worry this evening. I would, however, get her checked by GP just for peace of mind.

FastasleepInAManger · 18/12/2005 17:27

I'm not really sure if it's near enough to her hip joint to be a ganglion, it seems to be more embedded and surrounded by fat... I spose it could still be one..

if it is a hernia and she's havng a really good yell you might be able to see it - my ds had one and it only appeared when he was having particularly miserable nappy changes. as jalopy says, so long as she is fine and it isn't causing her pain, just go to doc tomorrow.

FastasleepInAManger · 18/12/2005 17:31

Ok thanks, will investigate when her brother next bops her with something

I'll let you know how much the doctor laughs at me tomorrow!

Argh got p*ssed about by the receptionists for the hundredth time, so will have to call later and try to get an appt 'sometime' this week...

Hate my doctors surgery! (Haven't done her morning nappy as she's still asleep, it could have disappeared, but I doubt it)

My brother had a lump in his armpit when he was about 3 months old - it was an abcess apparently. Does it hurt her when you touch the lump?

FastasleepInAManger · 19/12/2005 09:47

She didn't seem overly bothered but she was having a feed... I'll have to poke her again when I change her in a minute poor love!

my dd had this. I think it may have been about a week after her 1st or 2nd jab. I saw the doc who referred her to the paed but it went. Was told by the hv that it was her body working the vacc out of her system. If you're worried I would take her to the gp. hth

AveyourselfamerryLITTLEFISHmas · 19/12/2005 10:33

I had a hernia in that same area when I was 3 years old, so I would definitely recommend getting it checked out.

izzybiz · 19/12/2005 11:30

my DD has a lump in her groin, obviously when i found it i was quite alarmed and thought the worst! i took her to the doctor and she had a feel and informed me that its a gland. get it checked anyway but im sure it will be the same thing, i can only feel it on one side too, praps its just bigger on one side!

FastasleepInAManger · 20/12/2005 08:57

Finally got a docs appt (with a nurse practitioner, sigh!) at 3 this afternoon, despite the receptionists from hell I'll tell you how it goes (just in case anyone's wondering!)

Slightly worried as I was sure it had grown yesterday evening, and then it seemed to shrink back down... now I think it was probably my imagination!

jalopy · 20/12/2005 11:52

Sounds very much like a hernia.

fishie · 20/12/2005 14:24

have you been yet? any news?

FastasleepInAManger · 21/12/2005 15:10

It was an ovarian hernia, she needed some internal bits stitching up around each ovary.. after being rushed straight into hospital and straight into theatre we were casually turfed out the next day and little DD is fast asleep happily downstairs

I'm very glad I went to the docs!

jalopy · 21/12/2005 15:26

Poor little thing. Wishing her a speedy recovery!

donnie · 21/12/2005 15:55

OMG your poor little dd.....what a shock for all of you!! so glad she is fine now.

FastasleepInAManger · 21/12/2005 23:07

Thanks, she did really well... I think we're a bit too blase about surgery now after DS's kidney op!

There I was handing her over to the theatre nurse with a smile, almost forgot to kiss her!
