Painful wrist for 3 weeks now. Is it from holding baby?

It's mainly the tendon leading from my thumb, it's a bit swollen and very sore when I move it in certain (most) directions. Just wondering if anyone else has had this as I suspect it could be from carrying my baby around while feeding him, which is sometimes the only way to get him to eat! And what you did to make it better? It's getting to be a bit disabling, ie I can't bathe him on my own as I can't support him properly or lift him out. Not been getting any better either even though I've not been carrying him in that arm since it started.

Will go to the doctor, but can't imagine what she'll be able to do about it.

Might it help if you got a sports support for it?

MrsFrostgetful · 17/12/2005 12:23

i did get repetitive strain injury after birth of my 1st son....my son was a restless baby who didn't cuddle easily and he needed alot of vigorous winding after feeds... so really i am not suprised i suffered!!!

Janh · 17/12/2005 12:23

Like this? You can get them OTC in Boots etc.

MrsFrostgetful · 17/12/2005 12:25

yes...i meant to say i have a support gizzmo - got it from boots...cost approx £10 (12 years ago!!!!)fastens with velcro...still use it if i've been on mumsnet etc ...as i still sometimes get nigles...

MrsFrostgetful · 17/12/2005 12:27

excellent1 the one i have is like:

LP Wrist and Thumb Support - 763

it actually says about CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME... i thinks that's the same prob??? (i get tingling running from thump up wrist if i carry a heavy bag for more than 5 mins)

Janh · 17/12/2005 12:27

Wrist and thumb support might be the right kind. Actually it might be worth speaking to a pharmacist for advice on supports - also take ibuprofen maybe?

Janh · 17/12/2005 12:27

snap, Mrs F!

Thanks, those supports would certainly cover the sore area - do you think it will go away or keep reoccurring? Will Neurofen help it actually get better, or just alleviate the pain for a bit? The tendon's definitely swollen - it kind of clicks against the bone if I twist my wrist.

I had similar from carting dd around (clingy reflux baby) - the main relief is to rest it. Nurofen and perhaps heat/ice packs may help short term too. Also found problems when carrying the infant car seat, with hand, arm and back.

Now get repetitive strain in wrist from too much MN - oops .

Janh · 17/12/2005 12:39

Ibuprofen "reduces inflammation" as well as easing pain - I think that means reducing swelling? Ask a pharmacist about that too!

The support should stop you making the movements that aggravate the swelling.

i had this after having my son i was sent for physo at the hospital, they told me to keep moving it &use hot wheat bags followed by ice packs, i tryed it & it worked for me,they told me not to wrap it up to move it as much as possible.
i feel sorry for you as it is really painful.
also it keeps coming back.

inameeting · 17/12/2005 15:55

MrsFrostgetful - fancy getting it from winding your baby!! Thanks for that DeQuervain's Tenosynovitis suggestion - Think you've just diagnosed me, the powers of MN!! looks like that's exactly what I have!! found a good site here and did the test they describe - ouch!

Treefusis - I'd just been thinking maybe I should invest in one of those Hippy Chick hip seat thingies.

I'll take Neurofen and rest it as much as possible until I see the docs. Looks like I'd better get it sorted asap

Thanks everyone
