HELP PLEASe - Can Anyone Recommend a Cream/Treatment for Exzema

BROWNYtherednosereindeer · 16/12/2005 19:24

My friends little girl (19 months old) is suffering terribly with Exzema (despite being fully breastfed for over 12 months).

Poor little mite is covered in dry, sore, red skin and her mum has to cream her constantly - even putting a clean coat on her every day (her pillowcase has blood on it every night .

She's just returned from the doctors, who said that she'll see a specialist in FEBRUARY!!

I've told her that I'll ask you for some advice.

Thanks!!

has she tried sk cream or aveeno? you will find contact info for sk cream if you search my name and sk on old threads

daisy1999 · 16/12/2005 19:29

aveeno- non steroidal works fab!

misdee · 16/12/2005 19:33

we find dermol500 lotion best for my kids skin, we dont get on well with e45, aquous cream, emulsyifying ointment, eurcerin (ok for after swimming as its very greasey), doublebase, oilatum cream. there are more we have tried but not good.

BROWNYtherednosereindeer · 16/12/2005 19:34

Hiya, she said that she's using Oiltam (sp) and bath oil and anti-biotics too - no help, she's also tried goats milk - poor little mite looks so sad!

I'll print this out for her. Thanks!

OK my DS had horendous eczema. Here are my top tips but they may not work for your friend. Every eczema sufferer is different.

Avoid bathing as there is lots of crap in tap waer that irritates the skin. This has to be balanced with avoiding infection. Look into water softner or having quick showers.

Don't be afraid of steroid creams. Use them early at first flare ups which in the long run will mean you use less. We avoided steroids initially through fear and ended up ina real bad way.

Consider allergens in her diet or n Bfeeding Mum's diet. Ask for allergy testing

Tea Tree is great for wet or infected eczema.

Avoid wet wrapping unless things reach a crises point in which case it is good to get it under controll.

I found allergenics cream good for my own eczema.

Put oats in a muslin cloth and put in bath water if you really want baths.

If I think of any more I will post later.

BROWNYtherednosereindeer · 16/12/2005 20:38

Thanks Eaney for your help, I'll print this out and give it to my friend tomorrow - if you remember anything else, please post

dd2 has Elocon - however, it is quite powerful so you aren't supposed to use for more than 2 days at a time. It seems to work miracles though in our case.

Her eczema has cleared up a lot after seeing a nutritionist. Might be worth a try although not very cheap.

MerlinsBeard · 16/12/2005 21:09

diprobase, aqueous cream? not so good for dp or ds2 but works for some.

mil has bad skin reactions and eczema but since cutting gluten out of her diet has been much better. was by advise of dietician tho but agree that it could b something in mums diet?

going4potty · 16/12/2005 21:11

hi,i fully bf my ds now 3 and he had horrendousweepy eczema, use to bleed as hed scratch and then scab over and get infected. We use fragrance free oilatum in bath, Dermol 500 to wash instead of soap, doublebase as an emolient, only apply in one direction ie do not rub. We wet wrapped for a week and it camed it down a lot then only had to wet wrap every week then once every two weeks and so on, until we hardly needed to do it. Usehc intment if weepy also hc with bacteriacide available if infected.
Also use to vacuum every day to get rid of dust mite (this improved my dh asthma too)No oranges in diet or tomatoes

going4potty · 16/12/2005 21:12

ps it started to disappear around two and now only gets the occasional dry patch behind knees, but we hardly cream him up at all.
Hope this helps

checky · 16/12/2005 21:29

Hi

By far the best I know is a homeopathic ointment. Im sorry I cant remember the name but it has won awards. If you ring the dolphin clinic at dolphin house, brighton, they will give you details.
Good luck

BROWNYtherednosereindeer · 17/12/2005 12:02

Hi, thanks everyone for all your help and wonderful advice! I'll pass it on to her

DS2 had eczema type patches (am aware it wasn't full blown eczema) and in desperation I put kamillosan cream on them (the nipple stuff) because I had it around. Worked miracles.

ladyjess · 17/12/2005 12:43

my ds1 had eczema until about 8 months old and we used loads of different things (aqueous cream, oilatum, oats in muslin in the bath, diprobase, allergenics, calendula, etc, etc!) but nothing worked except the Elena Schalburg range of creams. She was apparently a burns nurse for 15 years and then decided to make her own creams. They are pretty natural. Go to her site (search in google). We used the bath wash to clean him and then the day and night cream to moisturise. There is also a Eureka cream that is for severe cases.

My ds2 also has infantile eczema but the above cream does not work on him! so we use Pure Potions, someone said below you can get it from the Dolphin house clinic in Brighton but also from most health food shops. The cream was named best eczema treatment or something like that last year.

good luck, it is horrible to see little kids itching! hope it clears up.

dd's eczema is/was by no means severe but we swear by a cream called Eumobase which you can get from Boots in the same section as E45 cream. Unfortunately not available on prescription but now that we are down from 3 tubes a week to one tube every 2-3 weeks the budget has recovered! Aveeno is our back up cream (which is available on prescription). Also good is the Living Nature range; I slap on manuka oil and honey antiseptic gel at the first sign of trouble. Oh, and a friend swears by the Barefoot Botanicals range. Also, oats and camomile in the bath plus one of those chlorine removing balls (I think that the Healthy House website has them). Finally, may be worht contacting the National Eczema society; they gave us lots of good advice e.g don't use fabric conditioner; try changing washing powder (changing to Surcare got rid of ds's eczema within 2 weeks); wash at 60 degrees where poss and give clothes an extra rinse to remove soap residue. Good luck and hugs to the poor girl.
