What supplements might help with these PMT feelings please? I'm out of control.

This has only been happening for about 6 months but about a week before my period i am seriously just being a nasty horrid person to my children and I've got to get it under control.

I used to be on the pill and took it without breaks (i.e. no week off for a bleed) for about 7 years to control a condition I have. I stopped 2 years ago and I'm guessing that it's taken this long for all the hormones to sort themselves out.

I've heard of people taking Evening Primrose oil to combat PMT but wondered if there is anything else i should consider and anything that is particularly relevant to my complete lack of patience and tolerance issue.
What happened this morning was horrible, I was screaming at the children and although they had not done what i'd asked them to do (brush their teeth) my level of over reaction was so so so huge, I am utterly ashamed of myself.

Any tips gratefully received.

TIA

I wonder if age does have something to do with it? Whether as we get nearer to the menopause it makes it worse. I'm mid 40s - how about you?

I think it may get worse as you get older. I'm early 40's and now have v irregular periods so maybe this is the start of the peri menopaus. Bugger!

menopause

Tyni if you are feeling that bad then I really do recommend trying magnesium supplements every day, they really help me and are generally accepted as being very helpful in treating PMT.

Mckenzie - could you tell us a bit more about the 'foods for over 40s' list please? I am now 41 and whilst I don't suffer badly with PMT, I do suffer with heavy, painful periods and hormonal migraines. I take it that apple crumble isn't on the list? :)

mckenzie · 11/09/2011 11:43

Sure. Ive just lent the supplement to my friend to read but as soon as she drops it back, I'll post some of the relevant recommendations.

Just been googling about Magnesium and it seems to be used and promoted as a laxative? Anyone found it has that effect on them? I could do with some PMT help, but I don't want or need a laxative.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/09/2011 12:01

Thanks Mckenzie.

Some useful info here
www.healthysoul.co.uk/womens-health/pms-can-be-prevented/

I do find that Magnesium has a mild laxative effect, might be worth trying to up your intake by eating magnesium rich foods BastardDog, see link above.

mckenzie · 12/09/2011 18:22

these are the foods that I have read in the article to be relevant to the topic of this post..

quinoa, helpful for balancing the blood sugar levels. Also helpful for menopause symptoms and also contains B1 and B2 but notably rich in magnesium which may help with poor sleep and low energy levels.

Raspberries. Eat with calcium rich fruit such as rhubarb to help uptake of magnesium.

Kale - rich in magnesium

chickpeas, helpful for balancing hormones

the 14 times listed were the above plus
flax seeds
soay beans
avocado
sardines
almonds
seafood
watercress
low fat yoghurt
oats
kelp and cantaloupe melon.

Sorry, its an A4 size article and i don't have time to copy it all out and it won't scan as the typeface is too faint.

I'll be watching this with interest Mckenzie, will you let us know how it goes??

I broke the mop by throwing it against the garage wall last week. At least I managed to do it in the garage where I wasn't seen, I was so ashamed. Like everyone else, it was over something ridiculous like dd not putting her socks on. Sad

I too was prescribed flouxetine a few months ago, to take just in the two weeks before I was due. It made a massive, massive difference. I felt like a cloud had been lifted and everyone at home noticed the difference. Despite this, I hated the fact that i was on anti depressants and came off. Stupid mistake as I'm back to square one now.

mckenzie · 12/09/2011 18:41

sorry to hear that rumpled. Yes, i will post updates if you like. I lost it with DS a little this afternoon so it's not working yet Smile and I'm no longer MPT either as period started yesterday so I think today's outburst was just sheer frustration and being being not the mum that i know I can be sometimes.

That's really helpful, thank you. And I love raspberries and watercress, so I will start with those! :)

Hi, sorry to hear about your PMT. I've had PMT ever since i started my periods and to be honest the only time it has felt remotely under control was when i practiced yoga regularly - none of the fashion yoga, just classic yoga! It's really helped to regulate my period and my PMT. My mum used evening primrose oils tablets and she says they work for her.

Lambsey666 · 14/11/2019 22:05

I also suffered for years and took prozac which did help
