Hypothyroid and premature menopause diagnosis

I have just been diagnosed with both. The GP really wasn't very helpful. I don't really know much about post menopause or hypothyroid (well a little bit more, I had postpartum hyperthyroid in the past). Doctor is also sending me for more bloods re pituitary and something else I can't remember. I'm feeling really anxious about it all. Can anyone shed any light on either please? I feel really sad at the thought I may not have any more children (not likely to anyway but still sad).

I am in the same situation, I was diagnosed at 41 and it felt like a real kick in the teeth.
One moment I was a slim, youthful mother of pre schoolers thinking about just squeezing in another before the big fourOH and then wham look in the mirror and I see an old lady. That's if I could remember why I was looking in a mirror, confused, depressed, overweight, forgetful, greying, sagging etc etc.
Now I am 43 and on HRT and thyroxine and feel and look a lot better.
But it was a hell of a paradigm shift to get my head around. It all seemed to happen so suddenly, I went through the ageing that takes most women 10/15 years in only a couple of years including getting abridge instead of front teeth and getting glasses.
Now I feel I am getting some of my mojo back. The weight is starting to shift, my skin is better than it has ever been and I feel mostly happy again. They will have to prise the HRT out of my hands it's been fantastic. I still need to work out my exact thyroxine levels as I could do with an extra bit of ummpf, but that will happen.
The best news for you is that you have a diagnosis, I look around at my mothers generation and I can see the same symptoms in so many of the women who reached 40/50 and sort of disappeared in a cloud of grey and depression for decades, marriages breaking down, life grinding to a halt and all avoidable
One silver lining is you get all prescriptions free forever with thyroxine.

Oh and avoid all the menopause health shop tablets as nearly all contain soya and that will inhibit your absorption of thyroxine, also fluoride toothpaste stops absorption ESP in the morning when you take your meds. I use a toothpaste called Bio Repair as recommended by my dentist?

Hi Zanz, I'm not on any meds. The doctor gave me an HRT and menopause printout and has referred me for further bloods but said I didn't have to have anything. My symptoms are not too bad. Apparently my thyroid is not too out and I do have transient thyroid problems, so the consultant often tells me to keep an eye on it and not to go on any meds until I become concerned. To be honest, I have put on weight but I have been overeating and not exercising as much as I used to. I go for regular facials and have starting cycling, I will also return to the gym tomorrow when DS goes back to school. I feel I can cope witht the menopause symptoms and I'm on AD's which seem to have alleviated my constant tearfulness. Unless absolutely necessary I won't go on any meds. However, saying all that, I have very little faith in the GP I saw and I will be booking an appointment with another for a second opinion. I really hope my skin care regime, sensible eating and exercise will help with my symptoms, I'm really not keen on any meds at all. Thank you. Smile

Hi there,
I too have been diagnosed with early menopause. ONly took the call 5 mins ago so feeling very emotional about it all. I have three kids and wasn't planning any more but I also train alot and take pride in looking (and up to know !!) feeling younger then I am :-( I am going to have further tests to look at my thyroid etc...not sure what I should be thinking but it helps to message people in a similar position.
