Unexplained chronic vomiting, and I mean chronic!

DS is 11 months. He vomits full meals feeds at least once a day. He only eats blended food as anything else results in projectile vomit. For the last 10 weeks (no exaggeration) he has had constant ear/ throat/ chest infections and colds.

I am at the end of my tether and haven't taken him out for weeks as he is vomiting 3-4 times a day because of coughing from the infections. He is around 5oz lighter than 2 months ago. He is now seeing a gastroentorologist and it has been proved NOT reflux. I suspected this was the case as he is not in pain.

I know it's a long shot but has anyone experienced this or known anyone that has? HELP

Yes, I had exacty the same thing with my ds1 when he was around that age. He threw up all his milk feeds and any food if it had lumps in it but the vomitting did not sseem to bother him at all. I went to the GP 3 times and they said he was fine (give him calpol, etc!). Then one night he was violently sick and started shaking so we took him to the children's hospital. They said he had a bad bacterial infection (started off as a chest infection) and put him on antibiotics which cleared it up in days.
He had the same thing where the goughing made him sick.
It is so worrying to see your baby like this. Has he been on antibiotics? or are you dead against them? Ii didn't really like the idea of him b being on them so young but we knew wew had to get rid of the infection.
Good luck. let me know how you get on.

Hi Sleighbells,

Have they looked into the possibility that he may have pyloric stenosis?. This can certainly cause projectile vomiting.

As for anything else involving the stomach I would give him some probiotics - they will strengthen the gut. Ds was sick loads until I tried them. You have to commit to having them every day for a few weeks to see an effect, though I have been known to successfully just take some when I have stomach ache or food poisoning. They are especially important if the chest infections have been treated with antibiotics.

ladyjess- I should have said, he has vomited once a day since around 7 months. Before that it was 2-3 times a week (all projectile). DS has been on 4 sets of AB's in the last 10 weeks.

Meerkatsunite- Pyloric stenosis has been ruled out. They can easily feel a lump on the tummy if they have that (apparently).

BB- I've tried pro-biotics etc but he vomits whether he has an infection or not.

I sometimes wonder if it's behavioural as he has sometimes vomited on the sight of his bottle or a calpol pippette. On the other hand, he'll sometimes be asleep, then wake up coughing and be sick.

Whatever it is, I just can't handle it anymore. It's very hard to enjoy DS at the moment.

Happened to a friend of mine with her DD. Turns out her DD was allergic to dairy, soya and lots of other things.

Epiffany · 11/12/2005 14:43

My dd had this.
WE withdrew all dairy as she experienced a temporary intolerance after a gastric illness. But dd was a lot older, taking milk of a young bay would need checking with a doc
If he is losing weight take him to the doc again and again.
DD did not lose weight so they were very lassez faire, oh she' not dehydrated, she's fine
as if vomiting 3-4 x day for 2-3 months is normal!!!!

sleighbells · 11/12/2005 18:07

DS already has a milk intolerance so he is dairy, soya and egg free still.

I just can't find any info on the internet about anything this bad. The dr's are now listening because of the weight loss but it is all happening far too slowly for me. How pushy can I get?!!

sleighbells. you poor thing. my ds2 had relux for the first 2 months of his life and i found it really hard to enjoy him or anything else really. it blighted everything as he threw up every feed and screamed most of the time.

have you been to a homeopath? not sure if you believe in this sort of thing but we went to one for ds2's so called reflux and after three remedies he was better. Now it could have been that he grew out of it but it is certainly worth a go.

not sure where you live but if anywhere near Brighton contact the Dolphin House clinic, it is an alternative health clinic for kids. I see Christian there, really nice guy. Or if not near here then ask if anyone knows a good one where you live.

Good luck, let me know how you get on. I really hope things get better.
