ds1 (10) who is almost never ill has had an awful cough and a raised temperature for over a week but strangely is quite cheerful!

been to the doctors twice, first time antibiotics and second time went back on the advice of mumsnetters as he had pain in his chest, but thankfully chest was o.k and was told it will have to run it's course, probably viral.

but, i have never known either of my boys have temperatures this long and now i am worrying.
His temp is 38.8.

hi festive
just looked on bupa website - 38.8 is absolute borderline for a fever in youngster. Lots of cold drinks, calpol if necessary - temp should come down.

thanx dadofthree

I wouldn't worry unless she is acting unwell i.e not eating/drinking or is lethargic etc. A temperature isn't on its own a problem - just the body's way of demonstrating that an immune response is occuring which is a good thing. Assuming that she has taken the antibiotics then it is probably viral. Of course if you are still worried I'm sure that the GP would give you an other consultation, even if it is a telephone call to ease your worries?
Hope that she's better soon.

it's gone up to 39.1 now, thats higher than it's been since he started last friday!
i thought he would be over it by now rather than getting hotter, in fact each night he has been a bit hotter than the last.

worry worry worry worry

I would suspect a urine infectiopn if she is generally ok in herself....

This hppened in dd when she was little. Raised temp for two weeks but never really high. Ended up in A&E when she went a funny colour one night and started to shiver. It turned out to be a UTI. I would have it checked to rule that out.
I hope you get to the bottom of what's bothering him and that he feels better soon.

My dd had a temp for a few days last week. It went up to 39.9 at one point and the gp stil didn't want to see her. It was some kind of viral infection -they gave antibiotics but said to wait 24 hours and within that time she started improving. Dd is 2 ad from that experience I think I concluded that a temp on its own isn't really a big worry, just means that the body is fighting 'something'
HTH but please do get checkd out if you're worried
(Out of interest, do you have a reeaally accurate thermometer? We bought a digital forehead one and it is excellent- much better than the underarm wriggler one.

thanx, mines a digital one to put in the mouth.
