hello

My Ds has just turned 1 and for the last 4 weeks or so has been suffering with a cough, I didn't think much of it and thought he would shake it off. Then 2 weeks ago he started with a runny nose (really thick and green) and again, I assumed it would run it's course. But in the last few days he has started being sick, mainly at night, after a coughing fit, but he has now completely lost his apetite and although he is still having his milk he is tending to bring most of back up ( he has never been a sicky baby). I took him to the doctors yesteday and she said it was probably the phlegm in his stomach that was making him sick and has given him antibiotics, which he started yesterday lunch time. I am concerned that he was sick again afer his milk this morning (he wasn't coughing) and we've had 3 really nasty nappies already ( he also has bad wind) and it's only 9am, would a cold give him an upset tummy, or could it be the antibiotics already which have upset him? (he reacted badly to antibiotics when I was on them and breastfeeding). Any advice or reassurance would be appreciated!

bumping for you!

Hi from the details and your nickname I guessed it was you.

Hope someone on here can help or advise.

If he didn't have the tummy upset before starting the antibiotics they might well be the cause. DS used to have foul "foamy" nappies when he had antibiotics as a baby. My DS was always sick when he had colds and he seems to produce masses of mucous even now (almost 3). I would keep an eye on him, make sure he gets plenty of fluids and call your doctor if he doesn't seem to be getting any better.

Hi there. This sounds exactly what my 11 month has had for the past week! I have been to see the doctor several times but they will not give antibiotics so she is just having to tough it out. She has not really eaten since last Sat and I am (as of today) starting to introduce some very easy foods very slowly. I am also trying half milk/half water to see if she can keep it down. I know how distressing the coughing and vomiting are, it's really dreadful - but I'm sure that your baby will get over it soon. The doc told me that it would take about a week - well it's been nearly a week and ds is now getting a wee bit better and starting to show an interest in her toys again. I hope this manages to reassure you a bit! There are a few other posts on this subject on this board.

Hi Mandy!! I thought I would get, if not some advice, some sympathy here!
I am convinced that he now has tummy ache as well, from the antibiotics, as he is much more miserable today than he was yesterday.
I waiting for my hv to call back as I am not sure whether to stop the anibiotics or perservere with them.
He is drinking still, so that is something.

What antibiotics has he been given? I only ask because at Christmas last year - dd at around 15 months old was diagnosed with bronchitus and was given Erythemycin (sp?) by the on-call doctors. Within hours of taking them she was suffering was severe stomach cramps - which I later found out from my normal GP were a common side effect of this antibiotic in small children...and hence not often given. We took her off the antibiotics ourselves as they were making her very upset? So, it could be that it is this that is causing the latest sickness/bad nappy problem.

Go back to your GP and ask for a change....there are loads of others they can prescribe instead.

I have spoken to our hv and she seems to think that he actually has a tummy bug as well, because he is not just vomiting up phlegm. He is on amoxicillin and she has advised that I keep him on the antibiotics to prevent him getting a really nasty chest infection and then use calpol for any tummy spasms he's getting and let it run it's course.
I gave him some calpol about an hour ago then put him down for a nap and he has gone off ok (he wouldn't nap earlier because I think his tummy hurt), so fingers crossed things will start to improve.

I would definately keep him on the antib's. Dd had a terrible tummy upset with Amoxi-clav (Augmentin) but tolerates Amoxycillan well, it is the most commonly prescribed one ime. It probably is an un related tummy bug, especially as his illness has gone on for some time, he's probably just run down and more vulnerable to infection
Once he's had 48 hours of the antib's I'm sure you will see an improvement

hope you had a decent night and fingers crossed that the abs start working. Tummy bug too , he is in the wars.

I have the adult version of this, I have a script for AB's to collect today, but I have dodgy both ends, and yesterday I had a cracking headache. You could power the national grid on the stuff that I coughing up and blowing down, it is bright green. Sorry TMI I know, but please do not worry too much, as it all appears to be part of the same dose.
