Baby colds - how long do they last??

My ds (4.5 months old) has had a terrible cold for about 5 weeks now. The past 2.5 weeks of them it has actually broken ie snotty nose, sneezing, cough etc. Previously just tended to be stuffy nose all the time. Hasn't gone to his chest and temperature not severe.
Any ideas on what this could be (other than a cold) and how long it will last would be greatly appreciated
Also, other than to reduce a fever and aches etc, does calpol help to "cure" a cold? Thanks

It does sound as though it's been dgagging on too long, colds do tend to last longer in babies as they cant blow their nose.

Mediced will have dry his nose up and help him sleep, but I think a visit to the gp would be a good idea.

IME baby's colds can drag on and on as they get one thing after another because their immune systems are immature and compromised with the first illness iyswim.
Calpol only makes them feel more comfortable by hiding the symptoms but does nothing to 'cure' colds.
Hang in there. It sounds like at least he's getting them all out of the way before Christmas. Also remember, it's all good experience for his immune system, tough though it is for you both.

Thanks for all your answers. I have taken him to the GP 3 times now but all they say is that it hasn't gone to his chest and have given him drops for his nose. One GP even said that it could last 6 months

Someone else told me that it could be teething as he seems to have some of the related symptoms to that too. Is this true and if so will it happen everytime he gets a tooth?
