breast lump

newnamefornow · 07/12/2005 21:32

I have a lump in my breast. It's very near the nipple and I think it may come and go with my cycle. It feels like a milk duct but I stopped b/f 18 months ago.

Went to the doc this morning about it and I've now got a 2-3 week wait for a referral.

I'm going mad with worry.

Anyone else been through this?

No experience but bumping this up for you.

Hope everything is ok

Earlybird · 07/12/2005 21:47

Yup, me. Going through a very similar thing at the moment.

Last week, I was given a scan by a radiologist who confirmed that the lump didn't appear to be anything sinister. I was then prescribed antibiotics and anti-inflammatory pills by my GP to deal with lump (which was very tender), and to prevent it from possibly developing into an absess. I then saw a consultant, who took a swab of discharge from nipple. Tomorrow I have a mammogram, and will have some fluid removed from the (much reduced) lump which will be sent off for examination.

I'm not hugely worried, as I coincidentally had a breast exam done about 10 days before the lump appeared. But, the consultant says it is not common for a non-lactating woman to develop mastitis. Will have to wait and see.

Sorry you're going through this. It is nervewracking. Does the lump hurt?

newnamefornow · 07/12/2005 21:51

thanks for msgs.

no, lump doesn't hurt.

i'm feeling very scared.

i HATE waiting.

hope the mammogram is OK tomorrow, Earlybird. When will you get results?

my mum has had several blocked ducts and cysts in the last 10 years or so - 15 years after she finished bf. they were very worrying at first, then irritating and a bit uncomfortable having them sorted but she hasnt had any major pain or anything and is perfectly healthy now. i hope everything goes ok for you

Earlybird · 07/12/2005 22:05

Thanks for your concern, nnfn. I have the various proceedures tomorrow, and then am scheduled for a return visit to the doctor on Saturday morning, when they'll discuss the results of the mammogram and biopsy. They say they always discuss results in person, so automatically schedule time - so it's not an indication of either good or bad news.

I'm so sorry you're anxious, but understand completely. It's easy for your imagination to get the better of you, and it's scary.

I'm rubbish at links, but here is the cut/paste of the thread I started when all this began. There was not a huge response, but you'll see that several other mnetters have also experienced this.

If you think the lump may be hormonal - does that mean you've had it awhile, and that it comes/goes?

newnamefornow · 08/12/2005 21:26

thanks girls

i hope today was OK, Earlybird. let us know what they say on Sat.

Best of luck to you both, truly.
Earlybird I once got mastitis pre-breastfeeding. It's uncommon but it can happen.
Please keep us posted and hope you both get good news.

newname,
i have posted on epiffany's thread, and have an ongoing one of my own. i've got breast cancer and am having chemo. hope that it all works out for you - if it doesn't then there's support here if you need it. the waiting is the worst thing - much worse than the surgery or the chemo, in my experience. try to keep busy and keep talking to people/posting. best wishes and big hugs.

newnamefornow · 09/12/2005 17:58

thanks marina and falalaala. i'm so anxious about it and finding it hard to think of much else. dh had testicular cancer 4 years ago and that was a GRIM time, I can't stop thinking about how horrible that all was...

hope the chemo's OK falalaala. are you feeling sick?

Hi all. Thanks all for your concern. Here's what I posted on one of the other threads:

I had a mammogram on Thursday night. The doctor also did another ultrasound to determine if it would be necessary to withdraw fluid from the swelling to do a biopsy. He decided that it wasn't necessary - what a relief.

I had another appointment with the consultant this morning, and he is very pleased that the lump seems to have virtually disappeared. He wants to check me again mid January, but fingers crossed, it looks like all is OK.

It seems that the antibiotics did the trick for me. I hope all of you that are going through this get good news soon. And thanks again for your online support. It really helped.

newnamefornow · 10/12/2005 13:41

that all sounds great, Early bird. I'm so pleased for you.
