Hi, My dd (just 1) won't drink any milk at all (hot/cold/cup/bottle...) other than on cereal. Any top tips on how I can make sure she gets enough calcium in her diet??

snowgirl apparently I threw my bottle away at 6 mo.
I have only ever had 3 sips of milk since, and I am 38.
Just never like the taste at all, not even with cereal.
Yoghurts, cheese and sesame seeds are good sources of calcium.

Don't some green vegetables have calcium in too? Broccoli and spinach?

doormat · 07/12/2005 11:45

You could try her on Rice Dream. Dd has the one with added Calcium

I think sardines have a lot of calcium, but you have to get the tins with the bones (my HV told me). I never did this as I can't imagine either of the dss eating sardines now.

But, when they were younger and on pureed food I gave them sardines with potatoes and tomatoes all blended together and they actually ate it.

Green leafies do contain calcium but in quite small amounts.

You could add also add grated cheese to meals - pasta sauce, mashed potato, scrambled egg - and give yogurts.

You can make sardine fishcakes too, which the ds's all happily ate, and you can buy orange juice with added calcium (Tropicana) and mineral water too, though you have to check mineral waters with HV I think (Danone). DS's also get a calcium supplement in medicine form (they're allergic to milk), N F Formulas Inc Liquid Calcium and Magnesium which I am told can be purchased over the internet (we get it privately through nutritionist)

By 1 year old they only really need 12oz of milk a day anyway.

So if you make sure she has a yohurt a day and a piece if scheese maybe as a snack, and some milky cereal ie weetabix then she should be getting about that, + some green veg etc!

also you could MAKE ice cream as a treat? My charges LOVE my home made ice cream which has a lot of milk in it.

Also custard / semolina / rice pudding / cheese sauce (or just cheese) on pasta etc!

Yopu can mash a decent size splach into mash potatoes (or any mashed veg) and possibly some cheese mashed in as well (Yumm)

How do you reckon 12 oz? I thought DoH said 1 pint (20 oz).

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 07/12/2005 18:55

yes, it's one pint

snowgirl · 08/12/2005 18:18

Thanks for all the help. I've heard conflicting advice on the amount. Some say 12 oz and some say a pint.
Reassuring to hear that you have grown up big and strong doormat!!
