Best way to stop or reduce heavy periods - anaemic

I have heavy periods which started about 4 years ago, I'm 44. My mum had exactly the same thing and went through the menopause at 47, so hopefully it's. I've managed to get my haemoglobin up to a reasonable level but my ferritin (iron stores) remains low. Iron tablets don't suit me so I just take Floradix. At my age would you try:

Mirena coil
Mini pill
Tranexamic acid
Other?

I've booked to have the Mirena fitted but don't like all the negatives I read. One thing I have to consider is that I have benign breast disease which is being monitored, but I'm slightly higher risk of getting breast cancer.

Thanks.

night sweats could mean you are peri menopausal.

Agree with lachesis - bleeding or symptoms that take you to bed or interfere with your life each month do not have to be tolerated. Push the GP for a referral to a gynaecologist.

I was SO fed up post babies, I was willing to have a hysterectomy! But a lovely gynaecologist did an ablation in 2005 (day surgery, no consequences other than a bit of weeping like you would get after a burn) and I don't have periods any more. At all. Talk about a total result! Only negative is that DH can never blame any moodiness on my part on PMT as we have no idea where I am in my cycle at any time. DH had already had a vasectomy so no decision needed there about more children. I don't EVER regret it.

I'm 29 and had lots of tests etc, definitely not peri menopausal.

Thanks lachesis, totally unaware that FPC can refer me.

Grumpy I have no idea then, I had horrendous night sweats for a year after dc3 was born so definately linked to hormones. I am now dreading the menopause!

Grumpystiltskin · 27/08/2011 20:49

I'm sure it's linked to prolactin which is a BFing hormone amongst other things and I know mine is slightly high but OMG, the sweat pours off me, I sleep wrapped in towels to soak it up. I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate it. Yes, no idea what will happen at menopause!!

I bf my 3 youngest and it only happened with her and for 6 months after I'd stopped Confused

Is there nothing they can give you to try?

lachesis · 27/08/2011 20:57

Yes, they can refer you, swinging. Ring them up and explain why you need seen, and that you've put in a written complaint about the GP. And really, complain about that GP. The Mirena is a recognised treatment for heaving bleeding. As that is failing you, you need and deserve further treatment.
