Contact with Chicken Pox ... how long before my DS will show up spots?

My friend came round with her DS and DD for tea on Wednesday. When she was changing her DD's nappy she showed me some spots that were on her DD's tummy and we ummed and aahed about what they could be ..... doh!!!
She had been to the doctor the day before for here MMR jabs and the doctor couldn't tell what the spots were either ... nor could her DH who is a GP!
Anyway yesterday (Friday) my friend called to say that her DD has chicken pox really badly - everywhere - and is quite poorly with it ...
I don't mind if DS gets it ... I am 25 weeks pg but had it when I was a child ....
Just wanted to know how likely it is that he will get it and if he does get it when will it show up??

Also ... as an aside .... any MMR bofs out there ... will the fact that my friend's dd was vaccinated when she had chicken pox have any effect on her??

My god-daughter had CP last year - I think they told us ten days to a fortnight? No idea about likelihood or the MMR sorry. Fingers crossed if he gets it it won't be too bad...

Oh god do I have to answer this? Email me off list if you want and I can give you some contacts. Actually I could email you as I've been meaning to reply. I'll do it now.

As for your son- think the incubation period is about 14 daysish.

Ghosty · 17/10/2003 22:27

Jim jams ... you are scaring me ... I did ask my friend whether she was worried at all (her DH is a GP after all) and she said she didn't realise there was anything to worry about ... so I didn't pursue it ...
Oh dear ...
I have to go out soon but hopefully I will pick up your mail later .... TIA JimJams ...

I take it that I don't have to keep DS in for the next 14 days? ... after all he might not get it ...

Just finishing off email now. Nah don't keep him in - not for chickenpox- although perhaps keep him away from antenatal appointments in case other pregnant women (especially those at the end of pregnancy) aren't immune. Keep him away from newborns as well.

Sent email ghosty and am now off to bed. If you want me to contact PS I'll send a mail tomorrow. Just let me know.

CP incubation period is 14-21 days. But they're only infectious for 1 day before spots appear. (That's what my book says anyhow!)

Agree that you needn't keep him in, just keep him away fron susceptible people and warn people before you visit. There's every chance your DS won't have caught it anyway. Both DS1 and a number of his friends had several contacts with CP before actually catching it.

I thought that incubation was up to 21 days.

LIZS · 19/10/2003 09:42

Agree with Soupie about 14 - 21 days. I did keep ds in for the last 5 or so of potential infection because it was when a lot of his friends had holidays looming and I didn't want to threaten that but in the normal scheme of things I would not have worried.
