Sore throat - back to drs again???

Would you take a child with a sore throat to the GP???

Took ds two weeks ago, GP had trouble looking in his throat, but said throat infection and presribed Amoxycillan.

He was on them for 7 days (dr said at least 7 days) so I stopped at 7 as he was fine.

Finished them last Monday.

Since Friday has had an on/off temperature of around 99 and complaining of sore throat.

Sent him to school today as seemed fine

He fell asleep on the sofa when we got in from school, is ok, but just quieter/sleepier than usual.

Shall I go back to GP's??? Feel like I'm there every week (well, I am actually)

Or shall I leave him until the end of the week?

(I'm also a childminder which makes if difficult to get to the doctors with ds, dd on buggy board and baby in buggy - putting me off going to the doctors a bit!)

Thanks for any advice........

Think you should take him back tbh. Could be that the course of ab's was a bit too short or he may have got a virus on top of it.

This may not be that helpful, but I have had a sore throat now for 7 weeks (!). I went to the doctors last week and he said that 80% of these things are caused by viruses rather than bacterial infections. It's unlikely (if the same applies to children) that antibiotics would therefore just clear it up.

I would take him back though, esp if his temperature is up.

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 05/12/2005 17:55

Thanks both of you

I think I know I should take him back really, although I'm also thinking, I don't go to the drs each time I have a sore throat, so wonder if I go down there a bit quickly with the children and just get prescribed something for the sake of it.....

There are lots of viruses going around though aren't there, so maybe he's just picked something else up

I'm exactly the same. I tend to err on the side of not taking him rather than taking him. I'm a bit loathe to keep giving him antibiotics that may, or may not do any good. I don't take them myself unless absolutely necessary so I apply the same to ds. Not sure if that is the right thing to do though. Arghh!!

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 05/12/2005 18:01

I feel like I'm there so much, I always joke to the receptionist I should have my own chair in the waiting room. Only trouble is, she seems to agree with me

LOL!!
Hey, you are looking after them. I've never met a friendly receptionist yet, so don't worry about her too much! You are keeping her in work!!!!

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 05/12/2005 18:09

that's true

He is asleep again now (very un like him!) He's also coughing, does that mean it's more likely viral???

OP posts:
LIZS · 05/12/2005 19:49

No, not necessarily - the phlegm could just be getting caught in his throat causing a cough reflex.

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 05/12/2005 21:25

Thanks LIZS, will see how he is tomorrow. I think a trip back down the doctors looks likely.....

How did he get on HMO2?
(I fell really bad now for not listening to him yesterday,)

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 06/12/2005 18:22

Hi MKM, he's ok now. Was quite drowsy last night (not like him at all!) and snoring like a steam train!
Dr has given him more antibiotics but said to hold off for 24 hours before giving him them as he's not long had the others. Got them in the fridge but don't know if I will bother given them. He's been a lot better this afternoon, I'll be throwing him through the gates for school tomorrow!

Don't worry about not believing him, he probably did give himself a sore throat from talking so much

Glad to hear he is ok, I guess there is a lot going round at this time of year and he has been unlucky. C seems to be getting over his cough and cold at last!

Did you ask the Dr about doubling up the doses?

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 06/12/2005 19:10

No, didn't ask. It's only 3 a day for 10 days so I can do the 2nd when he comes in from school.
Don't think I'll bother tbh, although glad I took him, as now I can send him back to school without feeling evil!

He also looked at his foot. All that's left is the scar now. Because of his skin tone it just shows up quite a bit. It wasn't ringworm, it was some other thing, which I really can't remember the name of, but he actually googled it and showed me photos, which were exactly like it! That's the third doctor we've seen!
It's not infectious, which would explain why me and R haven't had it

I forgot all about his foot. Did you tell him you knew he was putting his foot in his mouth I bet he wishes he could get away from some of the time!

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 06/12/2005 20:04

yeah I did. He doesn't even ask how I know, he must think I'm psychic!
