Does it sound like an allergy to sanitary towels?

I have been using sanitary towels for a few days and feel like crying. The place is red, sore, itchy and swollen. I have never had this before. I have ironed a muslin sheet and hope the place will calm down a bit. If not I will have to go to my GP on Monday or to out of hours to see whether it is an allergy to towels. How can they know? It will probably take two weeks for the results to come back.
Is anyone using hypo-allergenic panty liners ans sanitary towels? Where do I buy them? They probably cost a lot.
Thanks everyone.

It's awful, isn't it? Especially when you're using them to try and soothe your piles. I kept wondering why on earth the itchiness was spreading and why I was so sore!

My GP told me it looked like thrush but yet it looked so much better. She took a smear and I am awaiting results. I bought a pill to take in and a cream. They do not really help. I still feel a bit itchy after using canesten. I think the baby nappy change cream is doing a much better job. The pill did not help either. I am trying not to eat anything sugary and with yeast.
May be I should ask for the vaginal pill.

I had the same issue and it turns out I am allergic to the sticky stuff on the pads, although I did say that I don't recall sticking on to my fanjo instead of my knickers :o

Apparently it is quite common as they are putting more and more chemicals in them to make them cheaper or 'more effective', the plastic material is also an irritant which is why it makes you sweat and smell.

I have been using washing pads now for 4 months and the problem is totally gone, infact I am wearing one now and if I did'nt have cramp I would be oblivious to periods lol. No smell, no itching, no soreness and all with very little effort :)

Washable cloth pads are easy to deal with and so much more comfortable. I could never go back to sweaty disgusting plastic and chemicals (boak here :))

Oh and bamboo velour is especially comfortable

So where do you girls get your pads from? I find the idea of washing pads a little bit yucky. Do you soak them and wash by hands? Do you need to iron them?

I actually find Sainsbury's Basics very good - they seem a lot less plasticky than some of the brands (especially Always).

It is strep. How could I get it I have no idea. Why did all show when I was wearing pads? May be it was a coincidence but I did feel very sore when wearing sanitary pads. I guess I will need antibiotics. Is there any home remedies against it?

I made all my own towels-the pattern was off the internet. I made them out of old towels and brushed cotton pyjamas and t shirts, so they're really soft and comfy.

I would never go back. I made loads, so I just collect them in a wash bag and then at the end of my period they go in the wash-no problem.

I have different absorbancies from panty liners to night towels, I never have to buy those horrible things again and they are so much nicer and more environmentally friendly.

It's like using a muslin except smaller and less likely to fall out of your knickers at an inopportune moment Grin

Conotrane is good for sore nether regions IME.

hope you feel better soon

schroeder, thank you. [:)]
I am on penicilin and feel a little bit better down but I think I get pain in my kidneys so if it continues I will have to stop taking it in and go to GP again. This time I saw a different GP. She looked like she did not know about strep B. I felt so uncomfortable because of her lack of knowledge. I have read on line that many women get strep B so GPs should be aware of this bacteria and know basic answers. And yet, they earn a lot of money just for nothing... Not everyone of course but many. Only in my surgery there are three GPs I would not want to see.
