i've just received a distressing phone call from my mum. She and my dad are visiting my brother and his family in South Wales and whilst out walking the dogs this lunchtime my brother and 6 year old nephew have been attacked by a swarm of wasps/bees.

They were walking through a river when suddenly my mum heard them screaming. They drove immediately to A&E which was, thankfully, 15 minutes away. Mum and Dad have gone back to their house with my little niece and are awaiting news.

My nephew is about the size of a 3/4 year old and was covered in stings all over his head and face. Mum pulled c10 wasps/bees out of his hair on the way to hospital. I've googled this and now am more worried than ever. My brother is very badly stung as well

Does anyone have any knowledge of likely prognosis or outcome?

thx

How scary! Hope they are both ok now.

This happened to my sister and I when we were young. I kicked a wasps nest lying on the ground, unintentionally, and my sis fell on to it. She came off worse than me and spent the night in hospital for observation. She now is allergic too and carries an epi pen. We both have a phobia of wasps. My worst nightmare is one getting in the car when I'm driving.

I'm sure your brother and nephew will both be fine. They are in the right place.

Sorry to hear that many of you have had scarey experiences with wasps too.

My nephew has been released! (couple of hours ago) Bit of a surprise that they didn't keep him in all night but must be a good sign. He's home, totally washed out because of the morphine and they've been told to keep a close eye on him for the next 24 hours.

Apparently my brother's stings are getting worse and worse now though. I should imagine now the adrenaline rush from the incident has seeped away, he knows his little boy is safe and suddenly realises how much agony he's in.

I found a wasps nest this summer, in our shed. Got someone out the very next day to get rid of them and I thank God I did. Hopefully my nephew will not remember this whole thing so well in the morning (does morphine blur memory?) because this evening he's maintaining that he never wants to go outside ever again :(

Good to hear that your nephew is out, silkcushion, and hope he can be lured outside again. Hope you brother improves today. What a terrifying experience for both of them.

Thanks for advice re DS1, hellymelly. Ironically, DS2 has wasp sting allergy, and so we always carry an Epipen and Piriton around with us. So when DS1 was stung (in city centre!) I was able to give him Piriton straight away. He is currently still asleep, so will see how he is when he wakes up.

Glad dn is home, what a terrible scare. My dh stood on a wasp in the garden the other day and he said it really hurt (he was forced to sit in front of the cricket and ice it for a while HmmSmile)
We have had to have a couple of nests removed recently - one was a whopper, the guy who did it said because it had just rained before he arrived he reckoned there were about 5000 wasps on the nest when he went up in the loft

rockinhippy · 03/08/2011 13:04

Happened to my Uncle too, though he fell into a nest & was apparently COVERED in stings - he recovered fine, no allergy & he's now in his 70s & never had any problems bar a fear of bees

fatstanley-was it like THIS....www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1299744/Britains-biggest-wasps-nest-nearly-big-car-pub-attic.html ??
Shock Shock I need a Wine just from looking at that.

How is everyone? Hope both have recovered well. Been thinking of you.
