Is it obvious when they need teething gel or painkillers?

My son has been having teething symptoms for a while. Constant dribbling, bites really hard on anything he can get in his mouth and a whole range of shades of red cheeks. He can be quite grumpy and has days where he cries a lot. I don't think he has been bad enough to require teething gel. What happens? Do they suddenly start crying in a different way so you know they are in pain (like with colic - which was an awful cry.)

You jusy have to go with your intinct i think.
I use anbesol liquid, it gives immediate releif when she's really grumpy.

Don't think gel or anything can hurt to try anyway .

i have always found teething to be more of a moaning, grizzly cry rather than a shrieky colic cry.

ds3 is 18 months and teething on and off so if he is going to be at nursery and i think it might start later i give him a spoon of calpol before he goes to make sure he is ok through the morning. as long as he is old enough for calpol, give it a try and if he stops crying then you know its worked!
