DS just fallen on his head - what are signs to watch out for

HELP! ds 17 months has just fallen head over the arm of the sofa and landed on his head. He cried for quite a while but seems ok now, their is no blood or bump yet and I did not see which part of his head he fell on as was too busy trying to stop him from falling.

Should I take him to casualty or wait to see?

What are the warning signs? I cannot for the life of me find my child health book

I think the advice is that if he hasn't gone sleepy, drowsy, droopy or vomiting, he's absolutely fine!

forestfly · 14/10/2003 15:36

Girly oh dear, take deep breaths and go to NHS Direct. Sorry cant be of much more help. Your not supposed to let them sleep incase you miss out on signs they might be showing

whatsaname · 14/10/2003 15:37

It's all about heads today, just discussing hitting them on another thread. I'd wait and see, or you could call NHS Direct.

If he's sick I'd call your GP for some advice. Sorry I don't know what other signs to look out for.

GeorginaA · 14/10/2003 15:40

I would say that if he cried immediately and seems reasonably alert now then he's fine, but without a doubt I would phone NHS Direct to be on the safe side. They're very good at leading you through all the things to be aware of, and your mind would be at rest.

That said, do be aware that (in my experience) NHS Direct tend to err on the overcautious side, so be prepared to pop out to your local GPs office after the call.

pidge · 14/10/2003 15:48

When my dd was 6 months old I was running with the pushchair (stupid, I know), hit a pothole and the whole thing tipped over and despite the straps she came flying out landing on her head upside down underneath the pushchair (I went flying over the top - very elegant!). Anyway, she screamed like mad and was then obviously fine, and I even took her swimming, but then had a big guilt-trip in case she had some hidden injury so phoned NHS direct. Even though she was patently ok they are definitely over-cautious and told me to take my dd to the doctor, who of course took one look at my jolly gurgling baby and sent me packing.

So - I would say if your ds is alert, not vomiting and otherwise behaving normally there is nothing to worry about.

If you're concerned - try your GP / surgery nurse rather than casualty as a first call. You'll wait for hours in A&E, and your local surgery shold be able to check for concussion very quickly.

bluecow · 14/10/2003 16:16

Girly - it's so awful when that happens, but Blu's got it right. But do call your doc or someone if it'll help ease your mind.

Girly · 14/10/2003 16:19

Called nhs direct and have been told to take him to casualty cause he had lots of fluid come out of his nose, just waiting for dh and mum to look after dd and then am off to hospital

Oh dear. Hope all is well!

Let us know how it goes.

forestfly · 14/10/2003 16:26

Good Luck

tinyfeet · 14/10/2003 16:28

vomiting or fever - big signs

LIZS · 14/10/2003 16:29

Hope all is well. They are pretty resilient. dd (2) fell down a flight of marble stairs a few weeks ago head over heels, landing first on the bridge of her nose/forehead. Blood from mouth and a bit shaken but cried immediately and was still coherent. She was fortunately fine although had a bump and a graze on her nose and had bitten into her top lip. Did get her checked over by dr as I too was worried about hidden damage.

good luck

doormat · 14/10/2003 16:29

Loobie · 14/10/2003 19:30

Good luck at the hospital girly hope he is ok.look out for any unusual drowsiness in the next 24 hours and or any sickness, loss of consciousness or any strange behaviour.you can let him sleep but just try rousing him every hour to make sure he wakes as you would expect him too.

sis · 14/10/2003 19:58

Girly, hope your ds is okay.

Girly · 14/10/2003 21:19

Well, am back and ds is ok, was thoroughly checked over by very nice doc, they were concerned due to the fluid coming out of his nose but as it was a one off they thought it might have been snot!

He threw up once but again only a little so have been told to take him back if he gets worse and they will do a ct scan.

So thank goodness he is fine. Think the bump on his head did him good as he was vey happy while in hospital, playing with the doc and laughing, even clapping his hands and thoroughly enjoying himself

Thanks everyone for your advice and good wishes

I have to say, that although the nhs has problems ds was seen very quickly by very caring nurses and doctors and I really felt they cared about ds which was lovely.

fisil · 14/10/2003 22:14

Girly, sorry to be paranoid, but keep an eye out over the next few days. I fractured my skull at that age falling on my head, but Mum was advised by my aunt & Granny (both nurses) that I was just in a quiet, sleepy mood and everything was fine. After a couple of days (!) my Mum pointed out that I had never been quiet in my life, and something was wrong.

Basically, my aunt's daughter always behaved like that (lethargic), so she couldn't see anything to worry about, but my Mum knew my personality, and should have followed her instincts!

So if you feel worried again, take him back, even if there's nothing wrong again - you know him best!

Demented · 15/10/2003 10:08

Girly, sorry to hear about your DS, hope he is OK today, agree with fisil to keep an eye on him. Here's hoping he's on the mend!

LIZS · 15/10/2003 15:37

Hope all is still well and that you have recovered from the shock. My heart is still in my mouth everytime dd rushes towards the top of the stairs.

doormat · 15/10/2003 15:48

Glad to hear he is ok girly
Like fisil says just keep your eye on him and you know him best

Hello again

ds is still fine, no more worrying signs, not lethargic, eating ok and seems happy enough. Will keep watching for the signs but at least he has been checked over properly. Was a bit concerned that the hospital would think I was an over anxious mother esp as ds was laughling his head off but they took it very seriously.

Have spent the morning moving all the furniture round so that he cannot fall over the arm of the sofa again. He is just so clumsy at the mo and has no fear, can't wait for this stage to be over. Need eyes in the back of my head.

Was given a leaflet with all the signs to watch out for so am now well informed!

Thanks again everyone for your concern.
