MMR now DD can't walk!

My DD got the MMR on Wednesday afternoon. She was a little out of sorts on thursday but then on friday was really upset when she woke up. Then i noticed she had a bad limp, there was no mark on her leg, no fever. i called the doc he said to take her in if it got any worse. today she woke up and couldn't walk at all. i took her to the GP and he said there was no sign of infection so he's not worried. But i am. Has anyone else's DC's had this reaction after the MMR... Do you think i should go to another GP?

My dd had something similar at that age. Gp sent us to a and e who said it was either 'synovitis' (hip cold mentioned earlier)- so common that there was even a leaflet there about it! - or that she'd broken her leg on a slide after wrenching it the previous week. Apparently it doesn't always show up on X-ray at that age. She was fine again after 10 days or so.
The fact it coincides with mmr is tricky- if she was feverish and vomiting with a limp leg in normal circs that would be v worrying (as possible bone infection) but then as doc said it could also be normal reaction to jab + a sore leg! I'd have a low threshold for going back in if she gets any worse, but hopefully she'll feel better by tomorrow.

Thanks horopu so how long did it take your DS to come right?

I spoke to another doctor today and he thinks it's a virus that's got into DD's hip. anti inflammatory medication should do the trick but if she's not showing signs of improvement he said to take her back to a&e for another check-up tomorrow. A more serious but rare cause could be a bacterial infection in the hip joint which could require surgery. So fingers crossed it's not that.

Sorry not to reply before, we have been living it up in Auckland (went to the Zoo and Rainbow's End).

All those things were mentioned for ds1, it was a virus that had gone to but the x rays flagged up an underlying problem. He would not walk for 4 days but then very quickly was moving around all over the place. We were advised ibroprofen not paracetamol.

He is 13 now and has just been signed off by the ortho. dept as he has stopped growing and everything seems to have settled down. His bad hip means one leg is longer than the other. I want to stress that the infection did not cause any long term damage but just showed up a problem that was already there.

Hope things have improved for you.

It's been a hard few days.... update..

DD is still not walking so yesterday we decided to go to A&E again as i still wasn't getting any joy from the GP. We waited over 9 hours to see a doctor. They examined DD and took blood, a concerned looking doctor came to tell me the results had come back with an abnormally, low platelet and white blood cell count.

The doctor gave me a few possible causes the worst case "something malignant causing problem with the bone marrow". He also said it could be a faulty test but all i heard was malignant. I can't tell you how worried we were.

DD got admitted and more test were arranged for today. She had more blood taken, x-rays and an ultra sound. I was a really rough day for her. But thankfully everything came back clear. The bloods had improved overnight, the cause is still uncertain but it's likely to be a combination of the MMR and a virus. We need to go back on monday and more tests but at least we know it's nothing serious and the doctor believes DD will be walking again soon...

For about 18 hours we thought that there as a chance our beautiful DD could have some sort of cancer. It was the most scared i have ever been. DD has been getting extra cuddles and kisses all day. Hopefully she'll fight this virus fast and be back on her feet soon.

Oh intt - what a scary day day for you :( So glad she's on the mend now. Hope she's back on her feet soon!

Horopu · 30/07/2011 10:24

Oh ineedtotalk how frightening.
I was nearly sick when they said ds1 would need an op for an abcess on his neck once (he didn't, he just had really tonsilitus). I am barely start to imagine how terrifying that must have been.

Hope things continue to be more and more positive. Where in NZ are you? We are in the "winterless" north (yeah, right).

I had a reaction to the MMR as a kid crawled around for a week, severe leg pain both legs. Senior year in high school I had the MMR after I got the vaccine I had burning go up my arm down my spine and I passed out, they said I must have a weak stomach I told them what I felt. 3 days later my body collapsed as I walking home the same burning was felt in my spine and legs, most of my senior year in high school I had difficulty walking. I had a lot of neurological pain still do to this day, I was a healthy 17 year old until that last vaccine.

Tobydad · 18/04/2022 11:10

Hi,
Can you tell me what the result for you was? Our son has very similar symptoms following MMR vaccine 10 days ago, he has progressively gotten worse over this week and now is really struggling to walk. We have been to hospital and they ran similar tests but no result or diagnosis. I have been reading into arthritis that can develop after MMR for a short time. Any ideas?

Grapewrath · 19/04/2022 09:43

My DD had very similar. She had her mmr ten could hardly move her joints in her arms and legs. The hospital concluded it was to do with the Rubella part of the jab. She did recover but was unwell with various viruses and run down for some time after
