getting rid of flabby tummy

Are there any exercises etc you can do to get rid of a flabby potbelly? I've always had a bit of a pot, but its worse since after having ds (26 months). I've lost all the pregnancy weight (though am right at the top of my ideal weight band - should probably lose a stone, its just that I was a bit over when i got pregnant in the first place!!). But I still look 3/4 months pregnant... I was told by the gym when I joined on a trial (never went, what a waste of £40) that i shouldn't do curl-ups as they just built muscle so made it worse. Any suggestions or is this just something I have to live with unless I want to go on a mega diet (not sure I can be bothered to be honest). Any tips gratefully received (on losing the weight or good support underwear!!!).

I would love to know the answer to this question. I'm fairly slim but have always had a tummy.

Although it did really go down when I did yoga regularly.

Pilates is brilliant. It really works i cant say enough about it, your whole posture changes, the lot.Good luck and remember pot bellys feel lovely when you stroke them

It's important when doing curl-ups to breathe out as you go up...otherwise you do build muscle.

If you find out what works, let me know

Isn't belly dancing supposed to be good for tummies?

Spod · 13/10/2003 22:01

i agree with forestfly... pilates is great...easy to do, tones you in all the right places, training muscles you didnt know you had! with flabby tums its a case of targeting very specific muscles... pilates does that... buy a video or join a class....I loved it.

I just bought a video called Getting Back - cost around £14 and it has a series of workouts - one for tummy, one for thighs, bum etc, arms plus an energizer and stretching - the whole programme is about 35-40 mins but you can choose to do the whole thing or if you dont have time just do 1 or two of the workouts. I have had it two weeks and have seen a difference already - it is geared for post pregnancy and I think works the muscles you need to most - well it seems to be working for me. The tummy exercises are a killer tho' and really work the stomach !!!! best thing is that if you are not v co-ordinated like me you can do it in the privacy of your own lounge.

In the current issue of Mother and Baby magazine there are 3 exercises which they promise will give a flat post pregnancy tumy in 6 weeks. Hmm. Rather a strong promise, but I am trying them out as I have an attractive cantaloupe melon instead of a tummy. They only take 5 minutes so they are worth a try - they're hard though.

Yep, pilates. Give it a go.
