People who have an underactive thyroid take this. does anyone know what happens if you take this but do not have an underactive thyroid. What would happen?

Not recommended, dont do it, it will cause all kinds of medical problems and it will damage your thyroid for real in the long run.

Hi MTPW, probably not a good idea. Overdosing gives irregular and rapid heart beats, muscle cramps, diarrhoea, nausea, and awful headaches, to name a few. I am on thyroxine, and when setting the correct dose was overdosed for a week, and it was not a lot of fun. It did make me lose a lot of weight (8kg in first week) initially, but this was all water retained due to underactivity of thyroid gland.
I hope this is just a message out of curiosity, and not something you are contemplating, or something that happened accidently!!

Taking thyroxin that's not needed could cause you to suffer from excessive sweating, anxiety, palpitations, weak muscles, large stary eyes, just to name a few. It's not worth it.

your heart rate would speed up dangerously, shaking, anxiety ,like very bad pms, tingling in the limbs

yes, like the others say, don't mess with thyroxin

MistleToo · 29/11/2005 14:28

why would you?

unless by mistake?

not me. my mum takes thyroxin but is gaining weight. she is also going a bit do-lally, she is paranoid, angry, unreasonable, it's like she is going bonkers. she also has fibro-myalgia. she had 5 tests that came back normal before one test that came back that she had an underactive thyroid and she is ongod knows what meds - i cant keep track. you can't talk to her - she gets offended about everything (she used to be so much fun!!). I know she's got in-law trouble at the moment which is upsetting her, but her mental state predates her getting back in contact with them. the only thing I can think of is that she has a misdiagnosis and is taking pills that she doesnt need. Either that or she is having a mental breakdown.

blimey
can you go to the GP with her and act as an advocate/mediator?

How long has she been taking thyroxin for? My mum has/had Hashimoto and it took quite a while to get the correct dosage for her after the operation. She was "weird" before and after for a while. I though she was having a breakdown too.
