and i have called nhs and they have said up to an hour wait. i have given her calpol and she is now sleeping on sofa with a fan on her and it has gone down in the lasy half hour to 40..

What should i do? i think she is teething she has 12 teeth already. she been off her food today but has drunk 2 full beakers of juice but not really had any wet napppies, same nappy on for 9 hours and only just slightly wet but she is dribbling loads... can anyone help me please.

you can always give her ibuprofen as well which will help bring down her temp

sounds like you are doing all the right things

puff · 28/11/2005 22:24

agree about childrens ibuprofen too in conjunction with calpol

dingdongmeggymooonhigh · 28/11/2005 22:24

I think you have done the right thing. The same happened to my ds a few months ago he also had a convulsion where he was so hot but he was fine.

We took his sleepsuit off in the end and sponged him down with cool water and put him in our room with a fan on(not directly on him) we also gave him ibuprofen - it was a long night, the next dayhe was right as rain.
Wait for NHS to call you back and take it from there. It is scarey but I do think you have done everything right.

sounds like you have done the right things already. Maybe you should strip her down to just a vest or something? Sponge her down with warm water to get her temperature down quicker.

mmmmchocolate · 28/11/2005 22:25

she had medised not calpol i made a mistake? she is 40 still now.... is this normal (first time mummy)

You can sponge her down to bring the temp down further - not fun for her, but very effective. If she's okay in herself, then just keep on getting as much liquid into her as possible and alternate Calpol and baby nurofen. If she's not okay in herself, and the temp stays high, I would call the night doctor. HTH.

you are doing all the right things as others have said

I asked a pharmacist a couple of weeks ago whether it was ok to give ibuprofen together with medised and he said yes because medised is pretty much the same as calpol, so its ok to have used medised instead of calpol

hope that makes sense!!!!!!

hunkermunker · 28/11/2005 22:30

Don't sponge with cold water though - use it warmish and leave it to cool on her skin.

DS suffers from ridiculously high temps when he's teething - my GP thinks it's because he picks up a virus at the same time, but who knows. He's often had temps over 40, and once over 41. We do Disprol/Nurofen dosing and stripping off with fan pointed at him, but not sponging because he gets too upset for words if we do and I don't see it achieves anything then.

Hope her temp goes down soon.

mmmmchocolate · 28/11/2005 22:30

what is 40.3 converted???

she had fan on her now for 45 mins and still 40

Oh, and Medised and Nurofen totally fine together too - we use Medised/Disprol (as the paracetamol dose, not a dose of each iyswim) and Nurofen (he won't take Calpol).

hunkermunker · 28/11/2005 22:32

40.3 is 104.54

does she have any other symptoms?
How old is she? (I don't think you have said)

mmmmchocolate · 28/11/2005 22:36

she is 15 months, she is off her food had nothing today apart from 1 7oz bottle of cows milk, she is very whinny she is desperate to go to sleep but can't settle..

puff · 28/11/2005 22:38

have you got any baby ibuprofen in?

Can someone in the house get to an all night chemist?

hunkermunker · 28/11/2005 22:39

Are you offering her water? Even if you can't see her sweating, she'll be losing fluid because she's so hot.

mmmmchocolate · 28/11/2005 22:47

i have just given her some nurofin (spelling) and she took a few sips of her water.. and temp said 39.9 so hopefully is on its way down...

sounds good......hope she feels better soon

My view about these things is to keep an eye on things because they invariably will be fine, but I always say to myself I can always go to A&E if I'm really worried - that's what they are there for.

puff · 28/11/2005 22:51

hmmmm too many "things" and "always" in there

NannyL · 28/11/2005 22:57

medised is fine.... same amount of paracetamol as calpol plus something to clear their nose and help them sleep!
