Does Spatone or similar upset your stomach?

I'm feeling tired and run down like I usually do when my iron levels drop slightly but the last few times I've tried taking iron supplements, they've made me feel quite ill - horrid taste in mouth, slightly upset stomach, sicky feeling.

Just been looking at Spatone iron supplement on the Boots website and I wondered if it would be any easier on my stomach? Or does anyone have any other recommendations?

Thanks :)

Ferrous fumarate is much Easier to stomach than ferrous sulphate x

I've used Spatone for years - much better than the tablets IME

MrsMeow · 17/07/2011 19:41

Thanks everyone, will try the Spatone then. They do an apple flavour so even better!

PIMSoclock, the Ferrous fumarate is showing on Boots as being prescription only - do you know if this is the case?

I can also recommend Spatone, I took it with orange juice as you need vit C for absorbtion.

BerryLellow · 17/07/2011 21:36

I used to put my Spatone in juice too - I'm hugely sensitive to iron tablets (I refused them after DS2), but Spatone was a breeze and very effective IME

Floradix is also very good and has no side effects.

MrsMeow · 18/07/2011 10:44

Thanks again, will grab some tomorrow, or Floradix whatever is cheaper Grin

Spatone contains about 14mg of iron nowhere near enough to treat any iron deficiency it is a food supplement and nothing more. Floradix is exactly the same just a food supplement and not a treatment for iron deficiency. If you think you have low iron levels goto your doctor and pester them until you get Iron in the form that is suitable for you.

Whops, sorry, just realised you asked a question.
Yeah, it is prescription only, but like Crosswhy says if you are anaemic, it shouldnt be a problem to get it from GP and if you live is scotland that means you will get it free!!

MrsMeow · 19/07/2011 16:41

Thanks both. My GP does know I suffer with anemia but unfortunately, I do have to pay for prescriptions. I live 5 minutes from the Welsh border where they're free, didn't plan that right did I?! I was just after something gentle that I could grab off the shelf, but to be honest the Floradix/Spatone look as though they cost more than a prescription (£7.20) does anyway so I'll make an appointment. Hopefully I'll be able to get one or the other on script.

Make sure he gives you three months supply and then the cost wont seem to bad!

Good idea! Thanks again for your help :)
