Twisted ovary anyone?

Currently recovering from keyhole surgery to treat a twisted ovary and an ovarian mass. The mass showed up on scans etc but they didn't know my ovary was twisted until they got in there. Apparently it was twisted multiple times and they think that they mass is fatty tissue which has been squashed into a lump because of the twisting (but waiting for biopsy results to confirm - confident it's nothing nasty but could have some dermoid parts to it as well). They saved my ovary and said that it all now looks fine (although my scars look horrific - lots of seemingly random bits of string..).

Anyone else had this? Is it likely to happen again? Does anyone know what causes it? Am freaking that it'll affect my fertility (have one child but would love to TTC another this year). Could it be related to BF? Am still BF my 1 year old with no periods as of yet, and am thinking my ovaries got confused when trying to ovulate for the first time after baby and so this happened...

Any ideas??

Thanks Footle - sounds a horrible experience...

Am starting to think that it's just one of those things.. Seeing the consultant in a fortnight though once I'm all healed up so hopefully he'll have some more answers for me...

Hi, i've had exactly this. Had it when I was 22 and it was exactly the same thing, bengign growth on my ovary which caused it to turn and twist the falopian tube cutting the blood supply off and killing the ovary. Bloody painful at the time and took them a while to diagnose it but went in for keyhole surgery to have a look around and came out 4 hours later minus an ovary.

I was assured by the consultant at the time it would not affect my fertility and sure enough last year at the age of 36 I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy who it only took me 4 months to conceive.

I dont know what caused it, although, at the time I had had the early iteration of the contraceptive implant and although the consultant said he didnt think it was anything to do with it, I have always wondered.

I havent had a repeat of the symptoms since, and was always scared that it would come back on the other side and finish off my other ovary but touch wood, nothing has.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions and I'll do my best to help

Thanks Magrathea - that's really useful/interesting and congrats on your little boy!

I presume that you weren't ovulating at the time if you had the implant in? I only ask because I'm wondering if that's what's happened to me - my body's trying to ovulate but failing (due to me still BF) and that's caused my ovaries to play up... Am speculating that there's some sort of hormonal link to all this...

Hi Green, my ovulation with the impants was sporadic and I would occasionally get a period and then nothing for months and months at a time so it maybe could have had something to do with it. If that were the case though, surely this would be a lot more common in breastfeeding women or anyone with an implant - or maybe we were just unlucky!

I have to admit, I have often wondered whether hormones have played a part which is why I went for the non hormone coil following the birth of DS - I just thought my body had had enough of them.

As I said though, no recurrences so maybe it was just one of those fluke things which can happen

greenbluebottle · 13/07/2011 17:05

Good point about BFing women/women with the implant - think you're right that we're just unlucky...

I'm going to steer away from the hormones too - fed up with them.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Greenbluebottle, your post is old, but hopefully you may see my message. I have similar problem, had ovarian torsion free times in past 9 months. First time a month after birth. I'm breastfeeding as well still, and i had period twice by now, but nothing regular. I'm curious if they fixed your ovary? They are planning to fix mine in September. Until now this was not possible, as it was full of blood. I'm searching for someone with similar problems, as I'm desperate with this situation. I have pain in my left ovary about once a month, and usually gets better in a day or so, but sometimes laparoscopic surgery is needed. I really have enough of this. Anyone has similar problem? I'm a bit worried if they will fix my ovaries how this could effect on fertility. We're planning to have another child, and I heard that some women reported pain after fixation...

Hi ladies I have had three operations for tortion of my right ovary and fallopian tube. Very painful and caused serious concerns about future babies. During my last operation the surgeon stitched my ovary to the muscle wall. This caused pain for about 10 months after and then calmed.
I am expecting my first baby (10 weeks) and am very excited and happy. I am surprised how quickly I fell pregnant too. I am now experiencing ovary pain again and the doctor has referred me for an early scan... Nervous but optimistic that all will work out fine! Nice to know I'm not alone as I very much felt it when I went through the 3 ops and 6 months of pain without much understanding. Positive thinking ladies!! Xx
