How long does it take to get a cancer diagnosis?

I've been having some imaging tests done that have picked up a large tumour on my pancreas. If it's cancerous, the survival rate is 3% :( My GP referred me to a specialist nearly 3 weeks ago; I saw someone the week after but it was the wrong consultant, since then I've heard nothing. The scans have been dragging on since the beginning of April and I'm a mental wreck. Does anyone have any experiences of how long it takes to get a proper diagnosis when cancer is in the equation?

We had the same trouble as you (same condition too) We went to the Royal Marsden in London and they were fab Top people -much better than the local services

Hi AKMD. How are you? Have you had the operation yet or is it too soon?

AKMD · 22/07/2011 13:06

Hi Into thanks for thinking about me! Thanks to MN-inspired hassling, I has another CT scan on Monday and saw the pancreas specialist on Wednesday. His team's opinion is that it is a benign tumour (hooray!) but it has grown and it does need to be removed. I'm waiting - story of my life these few months - for an appointment at a specialist hospital in London which will be my pre-op consultation. A date for an operation will be set then and should be in the next 3-5 weeks. Recovery time is about 8-9 weeks total so I'm stocking up on good books!
