I'm gonna say it all as briefly as poss'!

Went to Cheshire to visit my sis for wknd. They all had a gastric bug a while back from their 11month old dd which she got from nursery.

They had no symptoms but my dd caught it, I assume from their dd'd toys etc..

She hasnt eaten for what is now the 5th day. She has runny and almost hourly stools. Although they are decreasing. She vomitted on the 1st and 2nd day but not anymore.

Drinks plenty of watery milk and water. To top it off she now has a cold, so runny and blocked nose, chesty cough etc.

She hasnt got blotchy/rashy skin, temperature, no discomfort in the light, likes to be held.

So basically should I weather it out or run to gp?

Thanks.

As it's been going on for so long, I'd take her to the GP. You don't know for sure that it's the same bug your sister's kids had, so it wouldn't hurt to get her checked out.

just rung gp they're closed for the day. only thing i can do is take to local hospital. ffs its not even midday yet, how the hell can they be closed for the day

Do they have out-of-hours cover, or an emegency number you can ring?

LIZS · 24/11/2005 12:01

tbh sounds like she is on the mend, whether it was the same bug or not, but it can take a while for the gut to recover. How old is she ? Could you hold off milk for a bit and see if the diorrhea stops ? However if she seems listless, raised temperature or in pain is there an out of hours gp cover or a Walk In clinic?

matnanplus · 24/11/2005 12:02

Mix a teaspoon of salt and a heaped tablespoon of sugar into warm water and have her sip that to replace the minerals she is losing.

Phone the on call number for your surgery / call NHS direct.

I would say a medical opinion is needed if only to rule out a secondary bug extending the symptoms.

What about marmite/bovril in warm water / watered soup.

matnanplus · 24/11/2005 12:03

Into a pint of water.

tamula · 24/11/2005 12:09

well i've been waiting for nhs direct to get back to me since yesterday. There is a walk-in at the hosp but when i went when she was younger -she's nearly 8months- they said they dont do babies here, so i had to go to a&e where they made me wait for 3 hours with a screaming newborn until i went home, without being seen.

I'm dreading going back, but i'll try the walk-in again and if no luck i'll try a&e again, although i dont think she's a&e worthy what else can i do.

Thanks for advice about what to give, i'll try that, i'm only begining to fret now because she's becoming fracticious

Agree with LIZS re holding back on the milk - apparently bugs ferment in the milk. You can substitute with dioralyte or matnanplus' recipe. It might also help to clear up the runny nose. Good luck!

tamula · 24/11/2005 14:33

we're back and she is fine and dandy! They cant see anything wrong with her

So i'll try the water, salt and sugar thingy asap.

Thanks so much for your replies.
