Amitriptyline/migraines

I suffer with migraines, they wipe me out for 24hrs at least.
I have managed them ok over a few years but now I have DD I cannot just sleep them of. So I visited my GP who has perscribed amitriptyline to take daily. After reading the information leaflet I have doubts over taking them, they are normally perscribed for depression or adolescent bed wetting!
Also it states on the information that taking for longer than 3 months is not advised, I really don't want to be back to square one in 3 months time.
Has anyone else been prescribed them for the same reason? Or taking them for another reason and had bad side affects?
I have been taking them for three days but tbh I am slightly concerned.

It is a question of trial and error and can take a couple of months even years to find something that works, good luck Op hope you can get a break from them

My GP initially said about beta blockers, but due to asthma I can't take them.
I have booked an appointment for next week because I can't cope with the drowsiness.

Hello. I was also prescribed amytriptilline for migraines. They didn't work for me and I was plagued by the horrible dry mouth and difficulty getting up in the morning. I too was put on to an epilepsy drug, topamax, and this absolutely knocked my migraines on the head. It did however make me very forgetful. I found myself walking past my house and office, and also wandering into shops and being unable to remember what I was there for! Another side effect was pins and needles in my palms and cheeks. Very minor compared to the agony of the migraines. When I finally stopped the drug after five months - no more migraines.
By the way, somebody told me that amytriptilline is very much desired by drug addicts in Glasgow. They call it 'I'm a trampoline' as it knocks you out so much that people could be jumping up and down on top of you and you wouldn't feel it.

Ami started off as a sleeping pill, then anti depressant, it is also used for nerve pain and for bed wetting in the elderly, the fact that it can help some people with migraines was a side effect that came to light later on,
