VIRAL GASTROENTERITIS?

My DD is 10 months old. I've just had this bug & recently my DD has been showing the symptoms but without the sickness part. The doctor says it's viral gastroenteritis, but i'm just not sure. She has diorrhea once a day, cries constantly, where she's always so happy, and at the minute, she's sleeping practically all day aswell as her 12 hours at night! She's off her food totally but will only take her SMA (which the Dr told us to keep off as it upsets their tummy too much) But, if that's all she'll have, what do you do?
Anyone got advice? What do you think it is?

The dr could well be right. When we've had a GE bug our kids have often reacted differently. She is probably crying in response to the discomfort of her tummy. Would agree about avoiding the formula for 24hrs, feed her dioralyte or water instead to keep her hydrated, then reintroduce bland foods such as rice, carrot and toast. Milk will probably just go through her, taking the good digestive bacteria with it, so you need to rest her system and perhaps use a probiotic powder to help her recover and enable her to deal with food again.

Thanks LIZS. You sound like you know what you're talking about. I've just given her calpol & put her to bed again. All this about good and bad bacteria... what should I be giving her?
PROBIOTIC POWDER.. AS IN? Sorry to be so thick!

There was a thread a week or so ago about it - here which named one or two suitable for infants. I recently had GE and was miserable but took probiotics through it and still am. Also "Live" yoghurt contains it.

Thanks. She's also slept ALL day today, after being up for 15 mins earlier, crying, i took her back to bed. Is this anything to worry about, do you think?

If she isn't drinking and is off colour and very tired then yes it could be a problem. Can you give your surgery a call to see if you should go in.
