asthma in 18 month how do i convince ds2 to use the ventilator thing

THe doctor gave ds2(18mths) an inhaler and ventilator thing with mask on monday. I have tried everything to convince him that its fun etc but he absolutely refuses. Some mnetter must have a good tip!

give it to everyone in turn, you, the bears everyone, make a shhhush noise and prentend to breathe in depply, then ask if your ds wantsa go, keep doing this each time. ds will eventually take it.

thanks will try this when he wakes up btw - can u give it him when he is asleep - or does he not breathe deeply enough?

Apparently (though this may not be helpful!) they actually breathe in more of the drug when they're crying, so if you hold the mask on despite struggles it might be work better than if he's calm. Seriously, I don't have any tips, as fortunately for me DS2 was our doctor's 'poster child' for spacer and nebuliser use - he knew it made him feel better. The tip with teddies and everyone else having a go sounds really good, though. Good luck!

can give it when asleep, nurses certainly did when my ds was in hospital. Also put stickers on the spacer, use bubbles as a distraction, also ds was allowed to blow some himself once he'd haD it. It does get better, after 2 years of having it every day he could confidently do it himself. Now he is 4.5 and only needs it when he has an infection

Colditz, choc buttons worked a dream for ds (as advised by MN might I add!)

I found that when ds moved to having steriods every day he became much better at taking it than when he had the odd 'puff' of the blue reliever

DS had one from when he was a baby with a mask and he still uses the same one now - 10 years later

Anyway we put stickers on it and do it while they are watching TV or reading a book

Yes we were told when crying is ok too

We count 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 when the vent moving inside cos then you know the drug is going into them.

BTW ventilin does have a strange taste
