Having an Oophorectomy...?!

I'm having an Oophorectomy at some point, finally had the go ahead last week - waiting for the date to come in the post. I've rung the consultants secretary to see if I can get a general idea of when it will be i.e. next month or next year, just so we can plan around it.

I had a TAH 18 months ago and the recovery was extensive due to problems (I'll see if I can find my old threads and do a link). This op will be done abdominally again as keyhole isn't an option because of my hysterectomy scar.

Just thought I'd see what other people's recovery was like in terms of hormones. I'm 34 and will be launched into clinical menopause - anything's better than the pain I've been living with though!

At least I have an idea of the recovery from having the TAH. I want our bedroom decorated beforehand - we stripped the wallpaper before the TAH and it still hasn't been done! Also I promised DD2 we'd do her room by her 13th birthday which is end of August. So will be busy bees over the next few months. I just wish I had some energy to get on top of things! DH suffers with MH issues so hoping he will have a good phase! Friends and family have offered to help which is a relief!

Tell me your experiences please Smile

Yes in my case it's mood related. I get so very down when my period is due, to the point of suicidal a couple of times (didn't take any action, but felt close to it). I was on Citalopram for 3 years, with the dosage increasing up to 30mg, without making any difference to my moods. Since going onto Prostap and HRT, I've come off the Citalopram and feel great.

Gynae has asked me if I want to try and come off the HRT but I'm a bit afraid to incase the black moods come back.

I'm worried though that the oopherectomey is a sledgehamme to crack a nut.

How old are you (if you dont mind)?
How long have you been on the HRT? Dont do anything you arent comfortable with.

If it was me, and the symptoms were mental and not physical then I would be staying on the HRT and keeping my ovaries, however I do appreciate that there are risks with HRT and you would probably be on HRT anyway if they did an oophrectomy on you.....

Can you talk it all through properly with your gynae? all the ins and outs and pros and cons etc, whether it would be diff HRT after an oophrectomy for example, and see what they think?

I'm 44. I think the problem might be with long term use of Prostap, rather than the HRT, which I'd stay on after the oophrectomy. I am back at the hosp in March, so need to find out some more about that before I go.
