Which cream for baby eczema and what about dietary changes?

DS2 is 7 months old. He has dry, red, itchy skin, baby eczema I guess. I have some steroid cream from the doc and have tried various creams. It's really bad at the moment despite the steroid. Which creams have you found worked well?

Also I wondered if diet could affect it - any thoughts/ideas appreciated

Hi Strawberry,

My DD (18 months) developed bad eczema over the summer. I switched to goats milk and I also use the aqueous cream prescribed (along with steroid cream which I didn't bother with) and that combination seems to be keeping it at bay. I also did a week of oats in a sock in the bath, which helped as well.

Another dietary change - I've cut back on the amount of wheat she has. I give her wheat-free bread and cereal, but I haven't cut it out completely.

I used a emmoliant cream from GP called double base.
Dd only had mild excema but i found it kept her skin well moisturised.

dd had very dry skin and mild excema as a baby and I bathe her in warm water and porridge oats (put the oats into a piece of cut off tights or a muslin and squeeze into the water). It works wonders on keeping their skin soft.

(works wonders on my skin too )

Where is the eczema? Could it be your washing powder or bubblebath that you use?

My DS sufferes with just his right hand between his fingers. We keep that at bay with 'chickweed' cream from the health shop and we also use Jason soap also from the health shop.

Ds is 5 months old, and we tried E45 but it did nothing. Now using Diprobase Ointment. Seems to be working. His skin is still a little dry, but he doesn't have the outbreaks that he did before.

His eczema is all over at the moment - face, neck, chest, tummy, legs and arms.

I have heard good things about double base - I think a return visit to Gp is needed.

Using oilatum in the bath and will try oats. for laundry use persil non-bio which i thought was meant to be ok for sensitive skin. He hasn't really had much wheat yet except ready brek. he is breastfed but i cook with cows milk. Is it ok to give goats at this age?

sk cream worked for my ds1. recommended by susan clarke, author of 'what really works for kids' and alternative health correspondent for sunday times. she has a website called what really works or you could search old threads for sk cream as i put the contact details in one of the posts.

Try using oilatum as a cream - just put a little on some cotton wool wipe over affected area then rinse - it worked a treat for my dd's eczema as a baby

Also don't use any soap or bubble bath until it has cleared up just use aqueous cream

shrub · 23/11/2005 14:32

also i only use greenpeople baby wash (see www.organicbabies.com or www.greenpeople.co.uk if interested) as sulphates ingrediends act as detergents in shampoo etc can cause very dry skin

LIZS · 23/11/2005 14:39

Balneum Hermal bath worked well for dd.

Might be worth a change of washing powder, just to see. My DH comes out awful with Persil non bio with aloe vera, which was a surprise. I now wash all towels and underwear in Surcare. If it's not DS, it's DH or me with one product or another, nightmare! hopefully you will settle with something that does work just takes trial and error in the beginning.
